Rene Meulensteen has sensationally claimed that Manchester United cannot be ruled out of this season’s Premier League title race.
After just two wins from their first six games of the new season, pressure was already beginning to mount on Ruben Amorim.
However, a routine victory against Sunderland, followed by a superb win at Anfield for the first time in almost a decade, has provided a renewed sense of optimism around Old Trafford.
The Red Devils still sit ninth in the table, but are now just two points off Liverpool, who sit in third following their third successive league defeat.
Arsenal continue to lead the way, with Mikel Arteta’s side showcasing their superb defensive capabilities once again with a shutout victory against Fulham.

And in between the two are Manchester City, who now sit in second place, just three points behind the Gunners, after three wins on the bounce.
But while many suspect that the title race will likely be contested between those three clubs, Meulensteen thinks the season is still far too young to make such sweeping predictions.

And the Dutchman, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at United for several years, even refused to rule out a surprise title charge from the Red Devils if they can build on their promising recent performances.
‘There will be little twists and turns around the corner,’ Meulensteen told CasinoHawks when asked about this season’s title race.
‘If Arsenal lose maybe one or two players and maybe they lose one or two games, everything changes.

‘That could easily happen in a run-in. So I still think Arsenal, Man City, and Liverpool are going to be fighting for the Premier League and we can’t rule out Man Utd if they go on this run we are hoping for.
‘It could be three wins in a row and suddenly the whole momentum shifts into a positive power.
‘Then suddenly it could be wide open because they’re only two points off Liverpool despite how the season has started.’

Meanwhile, the Dutch coach is confident that his fellow countryman Arne Slot won’t get sucked into the noise surrounding Liverpool’s poor form and will instead get his side back to their best before too long.
‘I have high respect for Arne Slot because I’ve known him for so long. He won’t change,’ he added.
‘He’ll be the same, very measured and very honest in his opinion and observations. He doesn’t make things worse than they really are because he knows they are playing some really good football and creating chances, they just don’t put them in the back of the net.
‘Last year, sometimes you catch a wave, you catch a flow, and everything that you hit goes in. Now they’re hitting a wave that goes against them. You have to ride the wave, turn around, and jump back on it. But that can only be done by not changing anything.
‘As I said, he’s very measured in his comments, they all make sense. He has a natural calmness about him, and that is exactly what you need within the club to reassure the players. Yes, we brought in a few new players. Yes, they need a little bit of time.
‘How can we fix it? We fix it on the training ground. Work hard, keep working hard, keep buying in, keep doing the things that we ask you to do, and eventually, we’ll click.’
‘You always know that if you lose games with the expectations that Liverpool has, you create noise. But that’s from the outside. You need to make sure that when we’re in, it stays nice and calm.
‘Don’t start pointing fingers at each other. Just point fingers at the issues that need to be addressed, work at it, improve it, and move on.’
