The Green Bay Packers retained their top spot at the pinnacle of the NFC conference with an emphatic second half display against the Aaron Rodgers-led Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Jordan Love-led passing attack was at its best on Sunday night, as the former Utah State man completed 20 consecutive passes, the first person to do so since fellow Packers QB, Brett Favre, as he helped Green Bay put up 35 points on what has admittedly been a suspect passing defense in Pittsburgh.
This was also the first time Rodgers had faced the Packers in an opposing uniform since departing for the Jets back in 2023, and unfortunately for him was not able to cap the occasion with a win.
However, in the aftermath of the display, during which it became more and more obvious that the future Hall of Famer was clearly in need of help at the wideout position, the Steelers have added to their receiving corps.
Packers-Alum Signed By The Steelers To Reunite With Aaron Rodgers
And they haven’t just added anyone, but Rodgers’ former teammate in Green Bay, Marques Valdez-Scantling, as reported by Jordan Schultz.
Sources: The Steelers are signing veteran WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling after having him in for a workout. MVS spent four seasons with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers â while catching 13 TDs.” Schultz wrote on Monday afternoon.
This followed a report that came on Sunday, a few hours prior to the game against the Packers – also from Schultz – that the Steelers were planning to work out MVS on Monday.
Clearly the workout went well, and now the 31-year old deep threat, who last played for the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year, managing 40 receiving yards in 5 games, is a Steeler – per reports.
Marques Valdez Scantling Has a Long History With Rodgers
The two former Packers played with each other for four years in Green Bay, from MVS’ rookie year in 2018 all the way until 2021, after which he departed for the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he won two Super Bowl rings in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
It was documented the kinds of frustrations that Rodgers had with some of his younger wideouts – including MVS – who earlier on in his career struggled mightily with drops and lapses in concentration.
But the South Florida speedster broke out in his third year as a pro, managing what has remained a career high of 690 yards off of 33 receptions, along with 6 touchdowns through the air, and were it not for an injury-hit 2021 season, he could well have finished off his career with Green Bay in style.
In Pittsburgh, it is unlikely that Rodgers will turn to his former – and now current – teammate to be his #1 or #1B, but he does help the team as a reliable, veteran downfield target to complement the all around, more physical play of top wideout, DK Metcalf.
But the former Jet has a way of making the most out of his guys, so the ceiling could certainly be high on the Rodgers/Valdez-Scantling pairing for the remainder of the season.
