Ex-Raiders QB Derek Carr Calls out Browns for Shedeur Sanders Move

It’s becoming increasingly clear why teams were apprehensive about drafting Shedeur Sanders this year. To no fault of his own, everything the Cleveland Browns do with him is becoming news and a talking point on social media.

During the Browns’ preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Sanders was about to have a chance to lead a game-winning drive in the two-minute drill. Instead, head coach Kevin Stefanski decided to pull him from the game in favor of Tyler Huntley.

Huntley led the team to a game-winning field goal, but that doesn’t matter much because it’s the preseason and he’s highly unlikely to be on the final roster. It would’ve made sense to let a rookie like Sanders get that experience.

This became a heated topic on social media, and even former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr couldn’t understand the decision.

“I need to understand why we don’t get to see (Shedeur Sanders) run this 2 minute drill? “Carr wrote on X. “Wouldn’t you want to see your young QB operate in this situation? Get him more reps for the future? I didn’t see the whole game so maybe he already showed enough? Help me understand this…”

Many pointed out that Sanders had been sacked five times already, and there was no reason for the Browns to risk him getting injured.

“I can understand that. But this is potentially (you never know) his last time at reps all year,” Carr responded.

Sanders Was Hoping for the Chance

Sanders has already been humbled a lot this year after falling to the fifth round of the draft when many thought he’d be a first-round pick. He was hoping to get a chance to lead his team to the win, and was surprised that he didn’t get one.

“I didn’t know I was out,” Sanders said after the game. “Yeah, I didn’t know. I was on a bike. I was powering up. I was powering up for that two-minute drive because that’s just a situation every quarterback dreams for. That’s many situations I’ve been in before and I thought I was in, so then he told me I wasn’t in and I was like, ‘OK.’”

Sanders was frustrated, but he didn’t want to make a big deal about it.

“In the heat of the battle, you want to be that alpha,” Sanders added. “You want to be that dog. You want to be out there in that final two-minute drive. So of course, small things, of course frustrate, but that’s what happens when you want to be a player to be able to change a franchise.”

Will Sanders Media Hype Prove Too Much for Browns?

Sanders is a big name, so everything he does is going to be a news story. Even when he’s just trying to keep his head down and work, things pop up that are out of his control.

The Browns might not love that their backup quarterback is becoming such a talking point. This could lead to them looking for an out, even though Sanders still has potential to be a good starting quarterback in the NFL.
