Ex-Seahawks WR DK Metcalf Says Fan Used Racial Remark, Had Prior History: Report

Former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is under NFL review after a sideline confrontation with a Detroit Lions fan, and the follow-up detail that’s grabbing Seahawks fans is this: Metcalf reportedly had a history with the same fan and previously reported him to Seahawks security last season, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Not only that, but the fan is alleged to have made a racial remark toward Metcalf on December 21.

Metcalf, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was shown on the CBS broadcast late in the second quarter of Pittsburgh’s 29-24 win at Ford Field approaching a front-row fan, grabbing at his shirt and appearing to throw a punch with limited contact.

What Seahawks Fans Need to Know About the DK Metcalf Incident

The fan identified himself to the Detroit Free Press as Ryan Kennedy from Pinckney, Michigan, and claimed he sparked the confrontation by calling Metcalf by his full legal name: DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf. The report was so wild, it caused “DK Metcalf full name” to trend on Google for several hours on December 22.

But Pelissero, reported a source close to Metcalf said the fan used a derogatory word about Metcalf’s mother and then directed racially charged language at Metcalf.

Here’s the part that hits home in Seattle: Pelissero’s report said Metcalf previously flagged the same fan to Seahawks security last season while he was still playing for the club. The Seahawks played in Detroit on September 30 of 2024, though no penalties or fines from the game appear in Metcalf’s history, suggesting the two’s beef did not reach a boiling over point then.

NFL Reviewing the Situation for Possible Discipline

Officials did not penalize Metcalf during the game because they did not see the incident, and the fan was not removed from the stadium. Metcalf continued playing and finished with four catches for 42 yards.

Now the league is expected to review the altercation for potential discipline, with a decision expected to come on December 22, according to Pelissero.

Why This Is Blowing Up in Seattle Again

Metcalf was a second-round pick by Seattle in 2019 and spent the bulk of his prime years as one of the Seahawks’ biggest stars, which is why anything attached to his name still travels fast with the fanbase.

Metcalf’s career totals are 497 catches, 7,174 yards and 54 touchdowns across 112 games with the Seahawks and Steelers. This, of course, is not the first time during Metcalf’s productive career he has faced questions for his behavior. Nor, is it the Steelers first time dealing with issues in its WR room.

So when a report surfaces that Seahawks security already dealt with this same fan situation last season, it reframes the viral clip as more than a random sideline flare-up.

What Happens Next

The NFL review will determine whether this ends as a fine, a warning, or something more serious.

But from a Seahawks perspective, the headline is simple: Seattle is suddenly part of the story again because Metcalf reportedly flagged this exact fan through team security before the moment exploded on national TV.
