Frank Gomez gripped his Sony A7 Mark 3 camera tightly on a steamy Monday, July 14, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
He was hired by New York Jets wide receiver Tyler Johnson to document some offseason content. That included a two-day pre-scheduled workout organized by new starting quarterback Justin Fields.
Fields had told the media earlier in the offseason that he planned on getting some of his teammates together ahead of training camp to work out during the six-week break.
All in all, Fields flew in seven of his Jets teammates and veteran NFL tight end Irv Smith Jr, whom Fields crossed paths with during their time together in the NFC North for two seasons.
That group included Josh Reynolds, Zack Kuntz, Malachi Corley, Xavier Gipson, Irvin Charles, Johnson, and Quentin Skinner.
The workouts took place on Monday, July 14, and Tuesday, July 15. They started promptly at 9:30 am, all the guys shook hands, warmed up, stretched, and worked out, Frank Gomez, owner of Digital Dreams Photography, recalled.
Skinner, one of the Jets teammates that Fields flew down, described everything that they worked on the field: from the different route trees, scenarios, concepts, coverage reads, and how those differed when you lined up in the slot versus the outside.
Fields was meticulous with every detail about these workouts to maximize their time together: from what they did to how they executed it.
The Fields Organized Trip Wasn’t All X’s and O’s
Beyond the football activities for about three hours a day, across two days, Fields set up several team bonding events.
They went to a music studio. A fitting activity for this group. A band only sounds as good as its weakest member. It’s paramount for the entire group to be on the same page: every note, every arrangement, and every chord change.
Each part plays a critical role in the overall puzzle being put together.
The same can be said for the efficiency and effectiveness of an NFL offense.
The Jets have new pieces throughout: a new quarterback, new players around him, and an offensive coordinator making his NFL debut in that role as the primary play-caller.
The group went out to eat together. Hibachi was the highlight of the week.
Skinner told me Fields “has been a great big brother role model.”
The undrafted free agent pickup by the Jets, said Fields, has been there for him and his other teammates when talking about ball, but also importantly, about life.
“Been a great teammate supporting the guys with the offense, plus how to handle things like a professional with his actions,” Skinner told me.
Fields is on his third team in three years.
ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler joined me on “Boy Green Daily” this week and said you can make an argument that the Jets present Fields with his best chance to succeed so far in the NFL in 2025.
Whether or not Fields succeeds will be determined on the field, but he has taken all the right steps this offseason to put himself in the best position to take advantage of what has been put around him.
The Man Behind the Camera
Frank Gomez picked up his first camera two years ago. Six months later, he got into this business professionally.
He has shot sports for a year, but this was the first offseason that he has worked with Jets wide receiver Tyler Johnson.
How did those two meet? Happenstance.
Johnson and Gomez are both from Minnesota. The talented pass catcher was looking for someone to work with, and Gomez was looking for work, a match made in Heaven.
Gomez is self-taught, but has picked things up fast. Heading into this two-day workout surrounded by NFL players, Johnson trusted Gomez. Gomez received full creative control of the shoot.
Gomez used his Sony A7 Mark 3, with a Sony 24-70 f2.8 Lens on a Small Rig Cage with an external Rode Microphone and Feelworld 7” Monitor to capture the video content.
In addition to that, Gomez used a Sony A7R Mark 3 with a Sony 70-200 f2.8 Mark 2 to capture the photo content.
Gomez is a solo shooter who offers both photography and videography services with an emphasis on sports and storytelling. “I shoot everything from Sports, Weddings, and Corporate events,” he told me.
Gomez landing this high-profile gig with Johnson could be a springboard for his professional career. Fields and his teammates are hoping for the same result with this 2025 version of “Jets West.”
