The Atlanta Falcons received an important update on injured wide receiver Drake London ahead of their game on Sunday, Nov. 30 against the New York Jets. According to Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, London is doubtful for Sunday’s game as he recovers from a PCL strain in his left knee.
London suffered the injury back in week 11 during the Falcons’ overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers. He had played all the way through regulation while making seven catches for 119 yards, but injured his knee during the overtime period.
London was not designated to the IR following the injury, which is cause to believe he would be ready to return in less than four weeks which is the required length of an IR designation. He missed Atlanta’s week 12 win over the New Orleans Saints.
London was listed as a DNP in each practice leading up to the Saints game. This weeks initial injury report hasn’t been released, though Morris said that London is beginning to do some work, so a return is possible for week 14.
London leads Atlanta in each major receiving category. He has 60 catches for 810 yards and six touchdowns.
Falcons Defeat Saints Without London to End 5-Game Skid
Atlanta had lost five straight games leading into their divisional showdown with the New Orleans Saints, including two straight overtime losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers and a one-point loss to the New England Patriots.
Even though the Saints sit in the basement of the NFL with a record of 2-9, the Falcons showed a great amount of resiliency getting a win on the road without their star wide receiver.
Kirk Cousins has been elevated to the starting QB role once again with Michael Penix out for the season, and although he didn’t have his A-game against New Orleans, it was enough to get the job done. He completed 16 passes to seven different receivers, none of whom had more than three catches, but against a lacking Saints secondary, a couple of big plays made the difference.
Darnell Mooney stepped up to catch a 49-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter which put Falcons up by 14 and kept the score out of reach for a New Orleans comeback.
Playoff Chances Slim For Atlanta
At 4-7 with just six games left to go in the season for the Falcons, the playoffs aren’t technically out of reach, but that five-game losing streak put Atlanta in a bad spot as we head towards December.
The only chance the Falcons still have of making the playoffs is to make a run in the NFC South, which is currently led by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 6-5. Although Tampa got out to a great 5-1 start, three consecutive losses have them now fending off the Carolina Panthers, who are only behind them by virtue of a bye week for the Bucs.
The Falcons should be able to defeat the Jets handily this weekend, which could bring them to within one game of the division lead with one more matchup against the Bucs coming in week 15.
Chances are slim, but maybe the aging Kirk Cousins has one more trick up his sleeve.
