After a hot start last week at TPC Deere Run, six-time PGA Tour winner Max Homa proved that his game is trending upward. Once the world number 5, Homa now sits at 98th on the official world golf ranking, but that doesn’t mean he plans to stay there. Despite a promising first few holes, Homa ended up finishing T5 last week at the John Deere Classic. Acknowledging the letdown, Homa was still able to recognize his steps in the right direction.
“Super disappointing,” he stated, “but game felt good, so that’s nice.”
Homa started the weekend with four consecutive birdies and a 63, the best opening round of his career. But by Sunday, he had fallen two strokes behind the playoff of Brian Cambell and Emiliano Grillo, eventually won by Campbell.
Still, this marks a notable turnaround for Homa. After a disappointing second half of his 2024 season, Homa is looking to make big changes to improve his game and move up the leaderboard as quickly as he can.
All the Changes Max Homa Has Endured in the Last 14 Months
After missing the cut for the 2024 U.S Open, Homa has been unable to clench a top 10 spot. Since then, he has been making changes to both himself and his team. At the end of 2024 on the heels of a disappointing performance at the FedExCup Homa split from swing coach Mark Blackburn. After news of this change came out, Homa stated, “Time for a change. It’s unfortunate, I love Mark. He’s basically a part of my family. He’s just been an amazing human being.”
Then, at the 2025 Sentry, Homa ended speculation surrounding who his equipment sponsor would be, or if he would choose the free agent route. He arrived in Maui with a Cobra-Puma multi-year endorsement that included the use of their clubs and footwear.
When asked about his decision, Max mentioned the importance of ownership over his ball choice, but also that he found himself pleasantly surprised over how much he liked the 3-D printed Cobra King MB irons. Although unable to explain the process behind the 3-D printing, Homa acknowledges that after hitting, his numbers were great, and that is what matters.
Following this, Homa arrived at the Valero Texas Open in April with new caddie, Bill Harke. This move confirmed another major change for the golfer in a 6-month time frame. After growing up with and playing on the same public golf course as Joe Greiner, Homa and Greiner struck up a friendship and eventual partnership. One that lasted six years, and included all six of Homa’s Tour wins before parting ways.
To top it off, on Mother’s Day, Homa announced that he and his wife Lacey are expecting their second child. Their two and a half year old son Crew, is set to be a big brother. With all these changes, both positive and negative, Homa remains upbeat and patient as he looks to improve his ranking before the season ends.
Then, in early June, less than two months after pairing up with Harke, Homa found himself carrying his own bag during the U.S. Open Qualifier. A move he called cathartic, but offered little explanation for. It’s clear that Homa is continuing to make tough decisions, with the hopes of better days ahead.
Most recently, Max made the decision to step back from social media. Notably, Homa built a following on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) with his laid-back posts and self-deprecating jokes. His decision comes on the heels of his almost victory at the John Deere Classic. After his T5 finish, Homa shared distasteful messages he received in his direct messages from so-called fans. One, a Venmo request asking Homa for $1,900 with the message reading “Bc (because) you can’t putt under pressure.” Homa presumed this fan was upset over a gambling bet gone wrong and reposted it with the comment, “Gamble like a big boy Carl and take ur (your) lumps like the rest of us.”
Day One at 3M Open
After a disappointing Sunday round at the Barracuda Championship, Homa arrived at TPC Twin Cities ready to play. Finishing round one with 5 birdies and a bogey-free five under, Homa remained cool and collected throughout the round. With a great wedge game and solid putting, Homa fans can watch this weekend as he hopefully climbs the leaderboard and claims a top spot at the 3M Open.
