Fan Favorite Outfielder Hints at Return to San Francisco Giants

On Thursday July 31, 2025, the San Francisco Giants traded away fan favorite outfielder Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals, closing the book on a storied chapter for both Yaz and the Giants.

Yastrzemski, 34, played for the Giants for seven seasons from 2019-2025. He was a fan favorite in the City by the Bay, as much for his late inning heroics as the way he always gave back to the community. So, many Giants fans were very sad to see him leave.

But those fans may not need to worry. From the sound of things, it seems like Yastrzemski may be back in a Giants uniform very soon.

On Monday August 11, 2025, Yastrzemski joined the Foul Territory show to discuss the end of his time in San Francisco and the beginning of his time in Kansas City.

During the interview, Yaz said his former teammate and now President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey handled giving Yastrzemski the news of the trade very well, and then left the door open for a return to San Francisco in the very near future.

“[Posey] was incredibly respectful, we had a great talk,” Yastrzemski said. “It’s not the end of a relationship, it’s just we’ll see you in a year or two.”

Yastrzemski will be a free agent after the 2025 season, and the Giants haven’t yet found a right fielder to replace him. If Posey retools the team even more, he may be a better fit as a defense-first outfielder.

But Yaz could be describing a different kind of return. The Giants tend to love bringing former players back for appearances and even hiring them to the coaching staff.

Regardless, Giants fans can expect to see one of their favorite Giants back in the Orange and Black very soon.

Tyler Rogers May Be In A Similar Scenario

One of the Giants’ other deadline deals sent relief pitcher Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets

Rogers was also a longtime Giant, who had also played in San Francisco since 2019. In the wake of his trade to the Mets, Rogers praised San Francisco and said he would come back if the two sides can work out a deal in the offseason.

In the two deals, for Rogers and Mike Yastrzemski, the Giants acquired Jose Butto, Drew Gilbert, Blade Tidwell, and Yunior Marte.

It would be quite the fleece if they got Yaz and Rogers back, too.

Yastrzemski Also Defends Rafael Devers

On Foul Territory, Yastrzemski was also asked about Rafael Devers. Devers had a highly-publicized and rather infamous exit from the Boston Red Sox

Fans in Boston debated whether or not Devers was a clubhouse cancer or the Red Sox treated him poorly.

Yastrzemski had only positive things to say about Devers as a person and teammate, much to the delight of Giants fans who will be watching him in San Francisco for the next nine seasons.

“[Devers] was the best, man,” Yastrzemski said. “Awesome teammate, willing to do whatever he had to. I think he just got thrown into a weird circumstance and I think sometimes as players you have to stick up for yourself, and I think that’s what he tried to do.”

“He’s really smart and he cares about winning so much, so I don’t understand where all of the heat came from.”

Giants fans, would you like to see Mike Yastrzemski return to the orange and black? If so, in what capacity?
