Mardle, 51, stepped back from his usual commentary following the tragedy.

And darts fans appreciated Sky rounding off the night – following Luke Littler’s historic triumph over Michael van Gerwen – with a “really nice tribute” to Donna.

One viewer called it a “touch of class” and another posted: “Thinking of him and his family and hope to hear him on comms when the Premier League is back.”

A third wrote: “Well done Luke Littler and well done on Sky Sports for that tribute just at the end to Donna Mardle.”

The Nuke had been one of the many oche stars to send supportive messages to her husband following her death.

He said on Instagram: “Thinking of you Wayne.”

Mardle’s Sky colleague Emma Paton had announced the devastating news of Donna’s death to viewers earlier in the tournament.

She called her “the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna”, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness.”.

Paton promised at the time: “We will be remembering Donna throughout this tournament.

“Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you are in our hearts, we love you very much. And we will see you very soon.”

And when Sky stayed true to their word, right to the end of the Championship, viewers showed their approval.

One posted: “Wasn’t ready for that Donna Mardle tribute. Really missed Wayne. They did a great job holding the fort without him but he’s the voice of the sport.”

Another said: “Touch of class with the tribute to Donna Mardle at the end there.”
