Two days after Michigan fired Sherrone Moore, there is no shortage of names being linked to the position. Luring someone away from their current position may not be easy to do. However, you can’t deny what a high-profile job it is.
As several names continue to be floated about, Josh Pate revealed one coach who is ‘taylor-maid’ for the job, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham.
“It is desirable, but they’ve got to get Michigan figured out,” Pate said of Friday morning’s episode of ‘Get Up’ on ESPN. “I said yesterday, it seems like five years ago, but I said yesterday that before Michigan operated a coaching search, they needed to figure out what Michigan was. That’s kind of reflected in the marketplace of candidates. But I feel kind of strongly about this… that job looks tailor-made for a guy like Kenny Dillingham. I know other names will be thrown out, but I’m telling you, Kenny Dillingham for most college football fans is a guy who they’ve heard sound bites from.”
Kenny Dillingham Has the Best Odds to Be Named Coach at Michigan
Let the speculation begin. According to BetOnline, Dillingham has the best odds of -200 to be the next coach in Ann Arbor. Dillingham would be an obvious candidate for several reasons. He is a great recruiter, something he thrived in at Oregon before landing at Arizona State. As Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider pointed out, Michigan would offer more in terms of NIL than Arizona State.
“While the Sun Devils can offer some enticing things on the recruiting trail, Michigan offers way more from a resources aspect, and I could easily see him become a juggernaut as a recruiter in Ann Arbor. Got everything you want in the new NIL era of college football in a young, energetic, and passionate coach that gets the landscape of recruiting nowadays,” wrote Marich.
Dillingham brought Arizona State to the first 12-team College Football Playoff last season. They are 8-4 this season and headed to the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve afternoon against ACC champion Duke.
Will Kenny Dillingham Leave for Michigan?
This isn’t the first time that Dillingham has been linked to a job this coaching cycle. He was also linked to the Penn State and Auburn openings. Matt Campbell left Iowa State for Penn State, and Alex Golesh left South Florida for Auburn.
“I know right now they’re looking around, and there are other names. I don’t think Kenny Dillingham’s name should be too far down that list, and he’s done a whole lot more with a whole lot less. Like Matt Campbell to Penn State, I just imagine Michigan resources being handed to Kenny Dillingham. He’s actually the name I’d circle,” said Pate.
This coaching cycle has been crazy. It started with coaches getting fired in Week 3 and continued throughout the season. Out of all the openings, Michigan is the biggest yet. They have the resources to compete right away with the top programs in the country. Turning it down would be tough for any coach.
