First Assistant Coach Ditches Raiders for New Job Before Season Ends: Report

The Las Vegas Raiders‘ nightmare 2025 season is almost coming to an end. With a season so bad, there are likely to be some big changes across the organization.

Though there is still one more game left, one Raiders assistant coach has decided to leave the team for a new job. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, assistant tight ends coach Sean Binckes has left Las Vegas in order to accept a tight ends coach job at USF.

Prior to joining the Raiders, Binckes was a graduate assistant at Ohio State, where he worked under former offensive coordinator Chip Kelly for a season. At this point in the season, the assistant tight ends coach isn’t likely doing much to affect games, but it’s hard to imagine he’d leave with a game left if he didn’t think there was going to be a purge of the coaching staff after the season ends.

Even if head coach Pete Carroll retains his job, the offensive coaching staff is going to get a total overhaul. Greg Olson is a good quarterbacks coach, but he can’t be calling plays for a high-end offense in 2026.

Carroll Doubtful to Return

The writing might be on the wall for Carroll. If the Raiders lose to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 18, it would put a cap on what might be the worst season in franchise history.

Considering Carroll is the oldest head coach in NFL history at 74, it doesn’t make much sense for him to steer the rebuild. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport doesn’t expect the Raiders to retain the head coach.

“This could be a franchise-altering moment for the Las Vegas Raiders, so whatever they needed to get [the no. 1 pick], it certainly seemed like they tried,” Rapoport said on Monday.

“And now barring some sort of sudden change or something like that, it looks like the Raiders will be making the no. 1 overall pick. This can change an organization. It took a lot to get here. We’ll see if Pete Carroll is there for it. I doubt it, but we’ll see, but the no. 1 overall pick awaits the Las Vegas Raiders.”

Carroll Feels Support From Ownership

The 2025 season has gone so poorly for the Raiders that it wouldn’t have been a surprise if the team fired Carroll before it ended. However, he’s earned too much respect in his career for that to happen.

The Raiders will let him finish things out, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be back next year. For what it’s worth, Carroll believes that he has the support of ownership.

“I do. From all the guys I’ve talked to, I do feel like I have their support,” Carroll told reporters on Monday. “What does that mean? I don’t know, but our conversations have been really good.”

Ownership could just be playing nice for now. It’s not impossible to imagine a scenario where they give Carroll at least one more season. That would be a mistake with a rookie quarterback likely coming in, but the Raiders always seem to make the wrong decisions.
