Flyers Writer Drops ‘Home Run’ Trevor Zegras Trade Claim

The Philadelphia Flyers made a rather bold trade with the Anaheim Ducks in the summer. Trevor Zegras joined Philadelphia after some rough years in Anaheim. In exchange, the Flyers sent Ryan Poehling and two draft picks to the Ducks.

There were a lot of questions over how Zegras would perform with his new team. He had struggled with injuries. And when he was on the ice, he was rather inconsistent. He wasn’t the impact player he appeared to be early in his career.

The debate around this is going to span the course of the season. However, one Flyers writer believes the team has already won. More than this, they think it wasn’t a contest. The Hockey News writer Jonathan Bailey called the trade a “home run” just six games into the season.

“A rocky two seasons in Anaheim with the Ducks pushed Zegras out quicker than many fans out west would’ve hoped, but the wildly skilled forward has already found a new home in Philadelphia. That, more than anything, could be the most important part,” Bailey wrote.

“The results on the ice are coming right now, and as long as Zegras continues to work hard as he has been, he’s only going to endear himself further to Flyers fans starving for a player with his talents,” they continued.

How Is Trevor Zegras Performing On The Ice?

On-ice success can vary from player to player. What’s good for one is a bit underwhelming for another. Right now, the Flyers want to see consistent production from Zegras. To that end, it’s been a successful start to the year.

Zegras did not record a point in his Philadelphia debut. However, he has rattled off an assist in each of his last five games. He has been making important passes to put his teammates in a position to score early on this year.

Some will point to his goal total as a concern. Zegras has yet to score his first goal as a member of the Flyers. However, the 24-year-old is putting in consistent performances. This is a good sign that goals could be coming for him sooner rather than later.

Flyers’ Rick Tocchet Likes What Zegras Brings

Head coach Rick Tocchet has seen the young forward operate up close recently. And he has already been impressed with what he’s seen. In his view, Zegras is not complacent and is always looking to take his game to the next level.

“He’s a smart kid. But what I like about him is that he knows there’s more. Like, he texted me last night, (and said), ‘I want to watch some video with you.’ He wants it, you can tell. Because he feels there’s plays out there that he can make even more,” the Flyers head coach said, via PHLY Sports reporter Charlie O’Connor.

It’s hard to truly call this a home run move this early. However, it’s certainly encouraging to see Zegras playing to this level. Perhaps there is more to come for the 24-year-old this season.
