The Philadelphia Eagles have started their bid for back-to-back Super Bowl titles undefeated through the first month of the 2025 NFL season. Some may argue the Eagles‘ offense looks out of sorts with Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith all performing well below their per-game averages from last season, but style points don’t factor into your overall win-loss record.
Despite all four wins leaving some room for improvement, one NFL writer still gives the Eagles an overwhelmingly positive team grade for their performance in September.
Eagles Receive Second-Highest Team Grade for September by USA Today
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today only gave the Buffalo Bills a higher grade than the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles for September, who received an A- for their 4-0 start to the new season.
To some, this would constitute a harsh curve for the defending champions, who warded off three playoff teams from last season to start 4-0,” Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote. “But even team leaders like Saquon Barkley and A.J. Brown admit that the current offensive output isn’t anywhere close to acceptable, let alone meeting the standard that the franchise set in last season’s title run.
The lack of offensive production for the Eagles‘ star players is hard to completely dismiss as a concern for the Eagles. Yet, what is impossible to ignore is the defending champs perfect record through their first four games.
Exactly How Concerned Should the Eagles be About the Inconsistent Production from the Offense?
Is Saquon averaging two-and-a-half yards per carry less than a year to the start the season noteworthy? Yes.
Is A.J. Brown failing to top 30 yards receiving in three of the first four games of the season odd? Yes.
Has DeVonta Smith felt invisible in this offense at various moments throughout the season? Yes.
This odd usage and drop in efficiency is exactly why eyes should be on new Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo entering October.
Describing the unit as running hot and cold would obscure just how burdensome the lows have been, as the Eagles rank 30th in yards per play at 4.2,” Middlehurst-Schwartz added. “Returning a blocked kick and punt for touchdowns has helped settle close contests in each of the last two weeks, but Philadelphia has to find a way to kick the early-down woes that are dragging down both the run and pass game. Still, this is a supremely difficult outfit to knock off even when it’s operating at a fraction of its full capabilities. Chalk some of their success up to good fortune, but the ability to conjure big plays in key spots doesn’t seem like mere luck.”
On paper, the Eagles have one of the most talented collection of offensive players across all 11 positions in the NFL. Jalen Hurts has been exactly what the Eagles needed exactly when they needed it in all four games this season. He is proving that his run to a Super Bowl MVP award was no fluke.
Yet, it is reasonable for one to think that the Eagles‘ offense shouldn’t be struggling this frequently with this much talent.
Fortunately, the Eagles‘ defense has made timely stops, and they have a star QB who continues to be a stabilizing force while consistently making good decisions with the football.
