Former Alabama Crimson Tide national champion quarterback, AJ McCarron, provided very valuable insight on the team’s current NIL standing. He also went on a daunting rant spelling out what might happen if the Tide can’t compete in this new era of college football.
“And another thing that hurts Alabama right now is you look at these other teams that have $40-50 million in NIL,” McCarron said in a recent appearance on the McCready & Siskey show. “Alabama, and I know this for a fact talking to multiple people inside the program, Alabama’s got less than $20 million in their NIL. OK?”
The champ then went on to say that the reason Alabama has stayed relevant this long is because of their winning pedigree. If you take that away, what do they have?
“So you know what helps Alabama from a recruiting standpoint?” McCarron continued. “It’s not the money. It’s the fact that Alabama has been Alabama. And people go there because they know you’re going to win national championships, you’re going to be able to compete for national championships year in and year out, and you’re going to go into the NFL most likely if you do what you’re supposed to do.”
“If you start losing, all of that goes away. And now you can’t pay guys what other schools are dishing out? Now it hurts you even more.”
AJ McCarron Speaks On Effort Problem, ‘There’s No Pride In It’
One thing that jumped out on the tape from the Alabama’s loss on Saturday was the effort. Much has been made by the media who questioned why Kalen DeBoer couldn’t get his team to play hard in Week 1, but the former Tide gun slinger was having none of it.
“Because it’s not that they don’t have good players, it’s not that they don’t have good coaches, but the effort that these kids are putting out… I shouldn’t even say kids, they’re grown ass men,” McCarron said passionately. “You’re getting paid, it’s a professional sport now. These dudes should be giving out way more effort. And it feels like all they care about is their check coming in. There’s no pride in it.”
He then went on to say it doesn’t matter who is coaching, if the players can’t find it in themselves to sell out for the program nothing will change.
“And I don’t care who you have as a coach. Whether it’s coach Saban, coach DeBoer, it doesn’t matter if guys on the team can’t do what they’re supposed to do and play with a reckless abandonment to where they have a nastiness about them and people have a fear of playing them,” McCarron said. “They’re going to struggle. And I hate to say it, but they’ve got to find a way to get back.”
Nick Saban Confirms McCarron’s Figure
Former head coach Nick Saban was very transparent about the Crimson Tide’s NIL fund after leaving the team.
During in appearance on the Pat McAfee Show last December, the legendary coach told the panel about how much money they were spending at the time.
“Like the first year (2021), we had name, image and likeness four, five years ago, we had $3 million. And everybody was happy,” Saban said. “The next year it was $7 (million). The next year it’s $10 (million). And then this year it’s $13 (million). Now we’re looking at $20 (million). Where does it end?”
