Caleb Williams is the Chicago Bears‘ franchise quarterback at the moment, yet Mitch Trubisky also knows a thing or two about having that role.
So when asked amid the Buffalo Bills‘ joint practices and trip to Chicago for their second preseason game against the Bears, Trubisky offered a word of advice to the second-year Chicago QB.
The Bears will host the Bills in each team’s penultimate exhibition game Saturday at Soldier Field. Trubisky is expected to play, since he is in a competition with Mike White for Buffalo’s backup-quarterback spot behind reigning MVP Josh Allen.
What Advice Did Mitch Trubisky Give Caleb Williams?
There are only a few people on the planet who knows what Williams is going through, but as one of them Trubisky’s main advice was to enjoy the ride.
“Take it in. Enjoy the process,” Trubisky said after practice Friday. “All eyes are on you in this city, but it’s really a privilege.
“It is a fishbowl, but at the same time I would say enjoy it.”
Though it was almost a decade ago, Trubisky still recalls what it is like being a top-two drafted franchise quarterback for the Bears. Chicago, of course, traded four picks to move up one spot to select Trubisky from the University of North Carolina at No. 2 in the 2017 NFL Draft.
“There is a lot of pressure that comes with that, but it’s a privilege,” Trubisky said. “I miss that, and it’s a lot of fun to be the franchise guy, especially in a city like [Chicago].”
What Happened To Mitch Trubisky In Chicago?
Trubisky started just 50 games in a Bears uniform and went 0-2 in the playoffs in his two postseason games for Chicago. He is widely considered a bust, since he spent just four seasons as the Bears starter.
Still, it’s easy to forget Trubisky went 29-21 in his 50 starts and made the Pro Bowl in 2018. He finished his tenure in Chicago with a 64.0 completion percentage and 64/37 touchdown-to-interception rate and a respectable 87.2 quarterback rating.
The Bears replaced him with Justin Fields, who they chose at No. 11 in the 2021 NFL Draft. Williams supplanted Fields when Chicago chose him No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
“I only had [the starting spot] for four years,” Trubisky said. “I wish I had it longer, to be honest.”
Trubisky has since bounced around, starting as Allen’s backup with the Bills before going to the Pittsburgh Steelers for two seasons then returning to Buffalo in 2024. He has started just seven games since leaving the Bears, both in Pittsburgh, but went 2-5 in those outings as the Steelers starter.
But as a soon-to-be 31-year-old, Trubisky has had time to reflect on his NFL career. He said that even though he enjoyed being the Bears QB, he took it for granted a bit as a young player.
“I think I did [enjoy playing for the Bears] in the moment,” Trubisky recalled. “I think looking back on it, I wish I would’ve enjoyed it a little more.
“Not regret, but I think perspective now that I’m older.”
