The Buffalo Bills have had some undue noise happening in the running back room this offseason, lead tailback, James Cook, is wanting a contract extension prior to the start of the regular season.
And yet, he is reported to have acted very professionally since his return to the Bills camp this past month.

As of yet, nothing has come out about a possible extension, which Cook has said will get done, regardless of “when” – and indeed the “where”. However, news breaking on Thursday focused on the future of a different running back: former Bills RB, Latavius Murray, who announced his retirement from the league.

Former 6th-round pick finished his career with over 8,000 yards and 61 TDs — and was highly respected by coaches and players, as you can tell in this video: pic.twitter.com/gDVUePVAYb

Latavius Murray Retires From The NFL
Although he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the then Oakland Raiders, Murray’s career didn’t fully get going until the following year in 2014, where he managed 424 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
Murray then broke out the very next year, in 2015, when he broke the 1,000 yard rushing plane for the first – and ultimately only time in his long career, amassing 1,066 yards and 6 touchdowns, starting all 16 games. For his efforts, he was selected to the 2015 Pro Bowl.
After leaving the Raiders, the UCF grad resorted to becoming more of a complimentary back, never hitting over 150 touches in the run game after the 2017 season.
But he did feature in some famous backfield duos, including as part of a strength/speed tandem with Saints dynamo, Alvin Kamara, in 2019 and 2020.
What Was Latavius Murray’s Impact With The Buffalo Bills?
The Bills turned out to be Murray’s last stop in what was a long and impressive career in the pros, and whilst he did not make a huge impact, he certainly did make some decent contributions, adding 300 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground, alongside 119 yards receiving.
Murray played in two playoff games in 2024, including when the Bills got knocked out of the postseason in the Divisional Round by the Kansas City Chiefs, recording 40 receiving yards but no yards on the ground.
Perhaps not one who will go down in the annals, or a player who will ultimately end up in the hall of fame, but certainly a consummate pro and an excellent long time athlete in the league.
