Former BYU linebacker Fred Warner named San Francisco 49ers captain

SALT LAKE CITY — Fred Warner was named a team captain for the 2020 San Francisco 49ers season.

The former BYU linebacker is one of seven captains for the 49ers, joining Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle, Mike McGlinchey, Trent Williams, Arik Armstead and Richard Sherman.

Warner, who was recently activated off the COVID-19 reserve list, was drafted by San Francisco in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and has been a key part of the 49ers defense, starting every regular-season game in both 2018 and 2019.

Last season, he had 118 tackles, an interception and three forced fumbles.
