Former Chiefs Player Predicted to Tank With New Team

The Kansas City Chiefs are heading into a new season, and all eyes are on the future of the team, but sometimes, it’s okay to look back. It’s actually difficult not to look at past players and see how they’re doing with their new teams, if they’re still in the NFL.

The Chiefs have held onto a good stable of prized players, but they’ve also had to say farewell to some guys. Now, one of the player that is a former Chief is being predicted to not do well with his new team.

Of course, he could surprise everyone and thrive, but at least one NFL reporter doesn’t think that’s in the cards.

An Ex-Chiefs Player in the Hot Seat

The Chiefs have made some surprising moves over the years, but one of the more recent ones stands out. Joe Thuney was traded to the Chicago Bears during the offseason, with Chicago sending a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Chiefs and getting Thuney a two-year, $35 million contract extension following the trade.

Chris Schad of KC Kingdom has a piece out on June 25 about Thuney and has some dismal predictions for him. He says that “while Thuney is a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler, he may have been put in a bad situation.”

“The Bears offensive line was brutal last season, ranking 24th in Pro Football Focus’s final rankings for last season,” Thuney notes. “But Williams was part of the problem, ranking third in the NFL with 38 created pressures according to PFF. In addition, no quarterback created his own sacks more than Williams, who led the NFL with 17.”

Former Chiefs Player Could Be a Scapegoat

Schad makes the case that Williams has struggled with the weak Bears squad, but if adding Thuney isn’t enough of a push, he thikns Williams could possibly point the finger at him, as Williams did last season when he “not only threw the Bears staff under the bus,” but “his father backed it up after stating “Chicago is the place quarterbacks go to die.”

“Adding Thuney, who is a four-time Super Bowl champion, could go a long way toward changing the culture in Chicago. But if things go wrong, what’s to stop Williams from pointing the finger again?” Schad notes. “It’s also concerning heading into an age-33 season where the cliff can come quickly for an offensive lineman.”

He adds that the whole situation “could leave Thuney in a tough situation and perhaps a scapegoat if the Bears don’t fulfill their expectations next season.”

Now, this is a lot of projection on the part of Schad. It’s making the assumption that Chicago will have another rough season, even with new head coach Ben Johnson, and that Williams will be looking for someone to point a finger at again. So, it’s a stretch to say that this will likely happen, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Time will tell if Thuney and Johnson help the dismal Bears offense. Hopefully Chiefs fans are rooting for his success, as long as it’s not against Kansas City.
