Former Commanders Safety Lands With AFC Team After Waiver Move

The Washington Commanders parted ways with a veteran safety this week, but he’s not done in the NFL just yet. S Darnell Savage, a former first-round pick by the Packers out of Maryland back in 2019, was claimed by the Bills on waivers and will now head to Buffalo to continue his career.

“Darnell is honored to join the Buffalo Bills organization, contributing to the team’s success, and helping drive their push into the playoffs,” said Seth Katz of AMG Pro Sports, Savage’s agent, to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. The Bills previously claimed CB Darius Slay off waivers from the Steelers, but Slay is stepping away from football to contemplate his future and potential retirement. He did not report to the Bills.

Savage played five years in Green Bay before joining the Jaguars in free agency in 2024. He was waived by Jacksonville after two games this season and picked up by the Commanders, where he played a regular role in Washington’s secondary. However, Savage wanted to a chance to join a contender for the stretch run of the season, and the Commanders granted his request for a release.

For his career, Savage has 369 tackles, 10 interceptions, 40 passes defensed, a sack, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown. He projects to provide key depth in a thin Buffalo secondary moving forward.

The Washington Commanders Get QB Jayden Daniels Back This Week

In other major Commanders news, second-year QB Jayden Daniels is set to make his return from his elbow injury this week against the Vikings. After suffering a gruesome elbow injury in Week 9 against the Seahawks, it was unclear if Daniels would be able to suit up again this season at all. But he managed to avoid the worst-case scenarios with his injury, and five weeks later he’s back and ready to go.

On the season, Daniels has 1,184 passing yards and eight touchdowns to two interceptions, along with 262 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He put up those numbers in just six games, as he also missed some time early in the year with an ankle injury.

Can the Washington Commanders Build Some Momentum Down the Stretch?

Though the Commanders haven’t been officially eliminated from playoff contention yet, and 3-9, it’s just a formality at this point. Even with a win over the Vikings, Washington could still find themselves officially eliminated if the Eagles win or tie the Chargers on Monday night.

As such, the rest of the season won’t be about competing for a wildcard berth like it was last year. Instead, the Commanders will be looking to build some momentum for next season. It was not the sophomore campaign that HC Dan Quinn or Daniels were hoping for, but they can still take away some positive things down the stretch.
