Former Commanders WR Called ‘Difference Maker’ in AFC South

From the time the Washington Commanders showed up for training camp before the 2024 season, the buzz around Dyami Brown was bad.

Constant “trade or cut” rumors surrounded Brown, and became even more pronounced after fellow wide receiver/underachiever and former first round pick Jahan Dotson was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles shortly before the regular season.

“Away from a two-touchdown outing against the Titans in 2022, Brown has remained uninvolved in a rather underwhelming passing attack,” Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler wrote in August 2024.” “While the team has consistently searched high and low for consistent production at the position away from Terry McLaurin, Brown has found himself on the outside looking in as the season approaches.

Brown did little during the regular season to show his career was going to last much longer, with just 30 receptions for 308 yards and 1 touchdown. That’s when “Playoff Dyami” was born as Brown went head to head with the NFL’s best in the most high pressure environment possible … and somehow became indistinguishable from them.

In his first 3 postseason games, Brown had 14 receptions for 229 yards and 1 touchdown as the Commanders advanced to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.

After playing out his 4-year, $4.94 million rookie contract in Washington, Brown signed a 1-year, $10 million free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 10. Now, Brown’s playoff ascendence has him being projected as a difference maker with the Jaguars in the AFC South, where first year head coach Liam Coen takes over after one season as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“You look at somebody that’s able to attack the field at all three levels,” Coen told ESPN’s Michael DiRocco on July 6. “(Brown) can go down the field on the post, in the go, in the pylons and be the top shelf, but also you can throw him a screen and he can go and do something with it. I can’t coach that. I can’t coach you to go and make three people miss after you’ve caught the ball … That’s what he can do.”

Brown Projected For $1.9 Million Contract Offer

Brown entered last year’s playoffs with a projected market value of a 1-year, $1.9 million contract.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Brown’s deal could be worth up to $12 million including incentives — a massive payday that sees the once-embattled wideout getting 5 times what he was projected to get in free agency.

Dyami Brown is one of the best deep-threats out there and he showed up big time in the playoffs,” X user Nash Henry wrote on his official account. “He has a solid size/speed combo, elite body control, great ball skills, YAC ability and he’s aggressive at the catch point. Huge fan of this pickup.”

Generational Talent Ready To Take Field For Jags

Perhaps Brown’s biggest role for the Jaguars in 2025 will be figuring out how he fits in as a complementary piece to second-year wide receiver Brian Thomas and rookie Travis Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

With Thomas firmly established as WR1, Brown will likely fluctuate between WR2 and WR3 as Hunter tries to play both sides of the ball and the 2024 Heisman Trophy likely starts games at both cornerback and wide receiver as a rookie.
