The Detroit Lions are looking ahead to the upcoming 2025-26 season, but now is also a good time to reflect on last year. While the team had a fantastic regular season, they fell right away in the playoffs to the Washington Commanders in what was a very surprising topple. Those who love the Lions would likely rather forget about that fateful moment, but it was a learning experience, and it’s time to move on.
In the playoffs, the Lions brought on a veteran quarterback out of retirement, in case Jared Goff were to get injured. While Goff didn’t get injured for too long, he did have to leave the field in the Commanders game, and this player came to the rescue.
That player was Teddy Bridgewater, who has played with seven NFL teams during his career, including the Lions. He held down the fort for a short time during that Commanders game, when Goff had to leave to get checked out for a possible injury. Now, unfortunately, Bridgewater has been suspended from his new coaching gig at the college level.
Ex-Lions Quarterback In Trouble
Even though Bridgewater was only with the Lions for a short time, he was a favorite for stepping in and saving the day when Goff was sidelined. Some Lions followers even wanted him to continue in that Commanders game, since Goff was having an off day. Now, Bridgewater was looking forward to coaching at Miami Northwestern, but the college has suspended him from coaching while they investigate him for impermissible benefits.
Bridgewater is standing up for himself and posted a response on Facebook saying that he’s not going anywhere. In the post, he said that “the suspension came from MNW” and that “it’s impossible to suspend someone who doesn’t work for you.” So, if he’s suspended from MNW he says that he’s “free to go to another school of my choice” but that he’s not going budging.
He also said that “if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.”
Retired NFL Player Gets Support After Suspension
One Facebook commenter replied with a supportive comment, stating, “We see exactly what this is now. You’re standing in purpose and they can’t handle it. You didn’t break a rule — you broke the cycle. And some folks don’t like that. The community sees you and stands with you. You’re not going anywhere. We got you. Stand tall, Coach Teddy. The kids need you.”
If Bridgewater doesn’t end up coaching at the college level, he could come back for another run in the NFL, like he did last season. But, as Nick Halden of Detroit Jock City states in a piece published on Monday, July 14, “the veteran quarterback made the choice to leave the league in an effort to begin to establish his career.”
It does sound like Bridgewater’s heart is with coaching right now, so hopefully this all blows over and he gets the college coaching opportunity of his dreams.
