It has been quite evident that Dolphins fans alike have been critical of Mike Mcdaniel. Even amidst a late season win streak that has them potentially in the running for a playoff spot, fans have grown disillusioned with him. Now, there is a player who has seemingly backed up these thoughts.
Channing Crowder, a current Dolphins linebacker, recently went on WQAM to voice his concerns about Mcdaniel. In his interview, he clearly outlined what could go wrong should the Dolphins retain Mcdaniel after this season.
Rising Tensions Inside the Locker Room
“If we go into next year with Mike McDaniel as the head coach, we are running a gerbil wheel.”, Crowder said of the situation. And when you look at the events of the past few years, you could day that Crowder isn’t wrong in his assessment.
After all, Chris Grier was fired after many failures trying to build a competitive squad, the team lost Tyreek Hill early in the season, and younger players struggled to step up until now. Furthermore, many believe that this roster should have been a playoff contending one anyways, not one that struggle to gain their footing this season.
Most importantly, in their recent winning stretch, the Dolphins haven’t really beaten any solid teams. Aside from the Bills, the Dolphins have beaten the Commanders, Saints, Falcons and Jets during their recent winning streak. All of this adds up to frustration that is now seeping down to the players.
“We’re in an up right now, I understand that, but I’m not going to let the ups overshadow the downs.”, Crowder continued. Nothing will change that at all. Had the Dolphins been at least somewhat decent against elite teams, they may not even be in this situation. However, due to front office failures and player underperformance, Crowder’s comments couldn’t be more accurate.
Pressure Mounting on Leadership and the Future
Some fans will be pointing the finger of blame at owner Stephen Ross, as he has the toughest decisions to make on Mcdaniel’s future, along with countless others that could reshape the franchise. While one argument for Mcdaniel could be that it is bad to cycle through coaches, look at the division rival Patriots, whose rebuild has been rapid.
For the most part, should Mcdaniel keep winning, it might not bode well for both fans and Crowder. Still, the same problems have lingered throughout the Mcdaniel era with no signs of stopping. The smart thing to do would be to reset and re-evaluate the situation in the offseason.
The reality of the situation is that Crowder may not be the only voice internally voicing these displeasures. Chances are the team is in a certain state of malaise as well in this whole process. Now that Crowder has come forward with these comments publicly, there is no reason to think that more players won’t voice their opinions. This feels like a very cryptic period for the Dolphins that may end up not working out well in the end.
