You won’t see many better catches anywhere, on any level, than the one Washington Commanders wide receiver Treylon Burks pulled off against the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football in Week 13.
Burks caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Mariota in the third quarter to give the Commanders a 14-13 lead, snagging the ball with one hand and with Denver cornerback Riley Moss draped all over him, with Burks pulling the ball in as he landed flat on his back in the end zone.
It was a catch that brought back immediate memories of the famous catch former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made against the Dallas Cowboys in a Sunday Night Football game in January 2015.
“Insane stuff from Treylon Burks!” NBC play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico said during the broadcast. “As good as you will ever see … as good of a catch as you’ll see all season. Shades of Odell Beckham Jr. from 10 years ago.”
Both Beckham and Burks wore No. 13, which Beckham quickly pointed out on his official X account.
“13 13,” Beckham wrote. “Snagggg.”
Burks Was Huge Bust With Titans
It was just the second touchdown of Burks’ career but the first touchdown catch of his career.
Burks’ only other touchdown came when he was playing for the
Tennessee Titans and recovered a fumble by running back
Derrick Henry in the end zone. That was in 2022.
Burks was a 2022 first round pick (No. 18 overall) by the Titans, who put him on injured reserve and waived him
after he broke his collarbone on July 26, re-signed him to the practice squad then waived him again on October 7.
The Commanders signed Burks to their practice squad on October 17 and he was promoted to the active roster on November 5.
Social Media Melts Down Over TD Catch
Burks’ touchdown catch was the sort of moment that sends
NFL fans on social media into a full-on meltdown in the best way possible.
“TREYLON BURKS WITH HIS SUBMISSION FOR CATCH OF THE YEAR!!!” Bleacher Report wrote on its official X account.
“Fun fact: Treylon Burks had surgery to repair a spiral fracture on his middle finger 14 days ago… and now used that same finger to help secure this insane catch,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on his official X account. “Still got tape on (the finger) … Fun fact II: Earlier today, Treylon Burks texted his HS coach Bo Hembree of Warren (Ark.) High to have Hembree send him videos of how Burks played with a cast during high school — making one-handed catches. Then he made one tonight.”
Some people got really carried away. Burks had just 4 receptions for 72 yards in 2 games before Week 13.
“THIS CATCH BY TREYLON BURKS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE 10 BEST CATCHES OF ALL-TIME,” ML Football wrote on its official X account.
