The New York Knicks are now in the second stage of their Jalen Brunson era, with Mike Brown coming in to replace head coach Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks have made other roster changes to bring in players off the bench, but as of now, one of their best shooters remains unsigned with the team.
Landry Shamet became a free agent this summer after his non-guaranteed deal with New York ended after their Eastern Conference Finals loss. Now, Shamet, who recently took up a gig as a photographer at the U.S. Open, remains hopeful to re-sign with his former team.
“He’s been in New York and working out, hoping for a return to the Knicks,” the Associated Press wrote on Shamet. “But wherever he ends up and whenever he finishes playing, he knows photography will be there.”
Shamet, who made headlines for his presence at the U.S. Open, averaged 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds on a team-third 37.9% shooting from three in 50 regular-season games.
A Potential Knicks, Shamet Reunion
If a Knicks reunion is in the future, it would likely be on a similar non-guaranteed, minimum deal. He played in just over 15 minutes per game for New York last season and had an even smaller role for the team in the playoffs.
However, Shamet remains linked to the Knicks as a potential fill for their final open roster spot. A future with Ben Simmons now looks unlikely after recent headlines, and a player like Malik Beasley carries too high an asking price.
New York has been linked to Malcolm Brogdon as a Brunson backup, while Delon Wright and Cam Payne, like Shamet, remain unsigned after playing out their contracts for the team last season.
Though Shamet is hopeful about a Knicks return, he now joins MLB legends Ken Griffey Jr. and Randy Johnson as notable athletes in the sports photography business.
“Even when we go on the road I always have a camera with me, just to have. So whether it’s just like as a hobby, walking around, shooting stuff that I like to maybe print out and put on the wall in my house or doing things like this, it’ll always be there.” Shamet said. “And somehow I’m here at the U.S. Open.”
2025-26 Under Head Coach Mike Brown
With Shamet included in multiple roster and team personnel changes made over the summer, the Knicks remain a title-contender once again, set to begin the season with a bit different roster from that which began last year.
Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele were notable additions for New York, set to come off the bench. Under Brown, the Knicks could implement more ball movement than in the Thibodeau era, speeding up their pace with less reliance on isolation play.
In a recent article on ESPN.com, Brown was named one of the top ‘newcomers‘ in the NBA next season, expected to make a big impact in the league.
“Perhaps no coach in the league will face as much title-or-bust pressure as Brown this season,” Chris Herring wrote. “New York is coming off its best season in 25 years, which ended with two All-NBA selections and a run to the conference finals. It will be incumbent upon Brown to figure out how to get more out of the team’s starting lineup and improve the club’s defensive issues.”
Brown was behind just Kevin Durant, Desmond Bane, and Cam Johnson on the list of the top 14 ‘NBA newcomers’, the only coach mentioned.
The Knicks remain a top title hopeful out of the Eastern Conference heading into the 2024-25 season, bringing back each of their top six players, including Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mitchell Robinson.
