Former LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron Hints at College Football Return

Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron isn’t done with football just yet. The man who once brought a national championship to Baton Rouge made it clear that he’s eager to get back on the sidelines.

Speaking at the Patrick Queen Stadium ceremony on Wednesday night, On3 reported that Orgeron told WAFB-TV’s Jacques Doucet that he’s looking for the right opportunity, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be as a head coach.

“All depends what the best thing available is,” Orgeron said. “But I’m ready to coach again. I left a little bit of meat on the bone. I’m ready to go.”

He believes he still has more to contribute to the game he’s been around for nearly four decades. For a coach who’s seen the highs of an undefeated championship run and the lows of tough seasons and off the field drama, his statement signals that he still has the competitive fire and wants to compete for national championships once again.

A National Championship Legacy

The Louisiana native will always be remembered for the magic of 2019, when he led LSU to a perfect 15-0 season and a national championship.

With Joe Burrow under center and future NFL stars like Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase catching passes, the ‘19 Tigers were truly special. Many still call it the best team in college football history, and its offense the most exciting we have ever seen at the college football level.

For Orgeron, that season still sticks with him. He’s spoken often about how special it felt to be at the top of the sport and to bring so much pride to his home state:

“I felt like we were kings of the country,” Orgeron said back in August on Pardon My Take. “Everybody loved us and a lot of people were supporting us. The next day, I saw you guys (Pardon My Take crew) and I was the one that went to bed a little bit early. We had a press conference and you know we’re going home. I was raised out in the Bayou, where people caught shrimp for a living. Great people.”

That is just classic Coach O and the reason why so many people in the state of Louisiana and around the college football world love him. He enjoyed the national title to the fullest while never forgetting where he came from and how he got to that point.

What’s Next?

Orgeron’s tenure in Baton Rouge ended just two years after his undefeated national championship season. Two straight .500 seasons, combined with off-field allegations, led to Coach O’s departure.

But it always felt that he still had more left in the tank when it came to coaching. With a proven  51-20 overall record and 31-17 in SEC play with LSU, many college football programs will be looking Coach O’s way after his comments Wednesday night.

With four Power Four jobs already open and more expected to come as the season unfolds, Orgeron could quickly become one of the most intriguing names on the market.

UCLA and Arkansas are two notable openings that could be options for the former national champ.

Whether he returns as a head coach or as a high-profile assistant, the man known for his Bayou grit and fiery personality has made one thing clear:

Coach O is ready!
