A familiar face to Carolina Panthers fans may be getting his shot at redemption with a new team. Terrace Marshall Jr, the former Panthers WR, has been turning heads lately at Philadelphia Eagles training camp.
Marshall, who was the Panthers’ 59th pick in the second round of the 2021 draft, has yet to live up to the high expectations he had coming out of LSU.
On the 2019 CFP National Champion LSU team, Marshall played an integral role. Marshall scored 13 touchdowns despite missing three games on a team that also featured future NFL All-Pro receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. Despite the hype coming out of college, Marshall has yet to come close to those heights in the NFL.
From Star to Journeymen
While Marshall was a star at LSU, finding his footing in the NFL has proven to be a difficult feat for him. In his rookie season with the Panthers, Marshall had 17 receptions for 138 yards in 13 games played. It took Marshall until Week 9 of his second season to catch a touchdown pass, and thus far, that has been the only one of his career.
Coming into the 2024 season, and his fourth season as a Panthers WR, Marshall was determined to turn his career around and worked hard during training camp, but was cut due to not also being a special teams player. Panthers general manager Dan Morgan explained the decision during a media availability last August, as reported by Schuyler Callihan and Sports Illustrated.
“Special teams really comes into play, and Terrace hasn’t really been a special teams ace for us, and that played a big role in our decision to ultimately release him,” Morgan said. “I wish him nothing but the best. I think he’s going to do great, and I wish him success where he’s at.”
After being released by the Panthers, Marshall went on to sign with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad, but would be cut in October before ever playing in a game. Marshall finished out the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he caught three passes for 41 yards.
Possible Resurgence
Now in 2025, the former Panthers WR Marshall is looking to resurrect his career with the defending Super Bowl Champions. The Eagles feature one of the best wide receiver duos in the league in Devonta Smith and AJ Brown. Add in former first-round pick Jahan Dotson, who started to find his footing in the Eagles’ offense as the season progressed, and the Eagles feature one of the more dangerous wide receiver rooms.
However, the fourth wide receiver spot is still an open competition, and Marshall is there to compete for it in training camp. The Eagles’ All-Pro wide receiver, AJ Brown, offered praise of Marshall early in camp. Last week, Brown, speaking to reporters after practice, said Marshall would make things uncomfortable in the receiver room, as transcribed by Victor Williams of Eagles Wire.
“He’s coming along quite well,” Brown said. “Even in the spring, he was making a lot of catches. I know you guys didn’t see it, but he’s going to make the room very uncomfortable. And that’s a great thing.”
Marshall’s main competition for the fourth wide receiver slot will likely be second-year players Ainias Smith and the 6’6 Johnny Wilson. Marshall may have his work cut out for him to make the Eagles roster, but he’s made a good first impression.
