Former Patriots Coach Bill Belichick Makes Admissions After UNC’s Blowout Loss

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had the GOAT of basketball, Michael Jordan, watching the eight-time Super Bowl champion’s college football coaching debut.

Unfortunately, Belichick didn’t have the GOAT of football, Tom Brady, at quarterback this time around as North Carolina looked helpless against TCU in a 48–14 in a blowout. Belichick had been away from the game for a year after his final season with the Patriots in 2023, and his return to coaching left much to be desired despite all of the offseason and preseason hype.

“Yeah, look, they just outplayed us. They outcoached us. I mean, they were just better than we were tonight,” Belichick told reporters on Monday night. “That’s all it was to it. They controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage.”

“Their skill players played well,” Belichick continued. “And, you know, they just, they did a lot more things right than we did. So, you know, give them credit for being the better team. They certainly deserve it back.”

Bill Belichick’s UNC Squad Looked Dominant for 1 Drive

Belichick was expected to bring his NFL pedigree to a UNC team that needed a boost. Instead, TCU looked dominant and fresh off of a nine-win season the year before.

Belichick’s team opened the game with an 83-yard scoring drive, but TCU put things away after that. TCU dominated every category as the Tar Heels lost big at home in front of a primetime national audience.

“Multiple things,” Belichick said as he broke down the loss. “You know, anytime you give up two turnovers or touchdowns offensively, that’s not good. Give up several long plays on defense where they gained a lot of yards on one play. So just, just too many, too many of those.”

“One thing, it was a combination of multiple things, too many three-and-outs, too many long plays on defense, and then two turnovers,” Belichick added.

Bill Belichick Limited Compared to Patriots Days

While Belichick won’t let one game define a season, he also can’t make the in-season roster moves he once made with the Patriots. The Tar Heels start playing ACC teams in a month, so competition will only get stiffer.

“Again, the biggest thing is we have to correct some of the mistakes, mistakes we made tonight. I mean, we just can’t, we just can’t perform well doing some of the things that we did, we got to be better than that.”And then, obviously we’ve got to deal with Charlotte and the problems they present,” Belichick said.

Charlotte plays in the American Conference and lost its opener to Appalachian State on Aug. 29. The Tar Heels then face Richmond out of the FCS.

“We’ll just keep working and keep grinding away. We’re better than what we were tonight, so, but we have to go out there and show that, improve it,” Belichick said. “So nobody’s going to do it for us. We’ll have to do it ourselves, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Whether or not that amounts to a big turnaround for Belichick in year one with the Tar Heels remains the question.
