Former New England Patriots wide receiver, Jakobi Meyers, has gotten steadily better since coming in to the league with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent back in 2019, culminating in his first ever 1,000+ yard receiving season in 2024 with the Las Vegas Raiders.
After just 4 games, Meyers is on track to hit 1,000+ yards through the air once again, yet he is being touted by many as a potential trade candidate.
He had a trade request declined this past offseason, and now that the team is staring down the barrel of a 1-3 record, bottom of the AFC West, it could potentially make sense for Raiders head coach, Pete Carroll, to unload some of the team’s more valuable, but elder veterans.
This could, in turn, make way for the youth to shine at the position, which includes rookie wideouts, Jack Bech and Dont’e Thornton, who were selected in the second and fourth rounds of April’s draft.
Former Patriots Receiver A Potential Mid-Season Trade Piece
And Alex Kay of Bleacher Report believes that one team in particular could rise to contender status if they made a move for a player like Meyers – the Atlanta Falcons.
“One of the more glaring issues is a lack of weapons for second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to work with.” Kay wrote on Tuesday, “The team has been leaning heavily on Bijan Robinson to generate much of its offense, evidenced by the superstar back leading Atlanta in both rushing and receiving yardage over the first four contests.”
“…Darnell Mooney hasn’t been playing up to par, having recorded a pedestrian 7/79/0 line on 16 total targets since making his 2025 debut in Week 2. Rather than hope for an improvement, the Falcons should be aggressive and make a run at one of the league’s best complementary receivers in Jakobi Meyers.
Jakobi Meyers Could Become An Excellent WR2 in Atlanta
Kay notes Meyers has ended up as the de facto #1 wideout on the team – a role that he shares with tight end, Brock Bowers, who earned first-team All-Pro honors last season after an outstanding rookie year.
“Meyers has been moonlighting as a WR1 for the Las Vegas Raiders following Davante Adams‘ departure and leads the club with 21 catches for 258 yards and 33 targets.” Kay continued. “While those are strong marks, he’d make for an excellent No. 2 option behind London in Atlanta and has the ability to instantly elevate the Falcons receiving corps to one of the league’s best.
Kay also points out that in moving the 28 year old – who will turn 29 in November, the Raiders also finally fulfill Meyers’ original request; one that the former Patriot may still ideally like to play out – so there will hardly be any resistance on his end.
Meyers is not an elite-level, All-Pro caliber wideout, but he is an effortlessly consistent, durable and hard-working player who seems to always manage to contribute effectively.
The former New England man has not managed fewer than 700 receiving yards since his rookie year, and put up 800-900 yards/season for three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023.
The Falcons need a second reliable outlet for London not named Kyle Pitts, and a guy like Meyers could well be the solution – even if they have to pay as much as a fourth round pick, which Kay projects.
