Former Raider Goes off on Chip Kelly in Fiery Rant

The Las Vegas Raiders may not win another game this season. They have one more game against a bad New York Giants team, but at least that team has been competitive.

The Raiders hosted a 2-8 Cleveland Browns team in Week 12, and once again, the offense looked pathetic. The team could only muster 10 points while giving up 24. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly continues to look over his head, and Geno Smith is either taking sacks or overthrowing open wide receivers.

Former Raiders offensive lineman Richie Incognito doesn’t think Kelly has transitioned to the NFL and ripped into the coach.

“Chip Kelly’s offense is not translating to the NFL. It is a complete mess,” Incognito said on “The Arena” podcast before the Week 12 loss. “We have a workhorse in Ashton Jeanty. [We] need to feed him the ball. Everyone’s saying, ‘Well, the offensive line is bad up front.’ To get the offensive line in the game, you have to run the ball.

“You have to go downhill at these guys. You have to dictate the tempo of the game. If you have guys backing up and you’re dropping back 35, 40 times with Geno Smith, it’s not going to work. Chip, in his infinite wisdom, thinks that we cannot run the ball and still get play action to work. You have to threaten them a little bit with the run and get your play action going. We’re running play action out of the shotgun. We’re putting it in Geno’s hands, and Geno is turning it over left and right.”

Does Kelly Think He’s Smarter Than Everybody?

Kelly was once considered a great offensive mind. His offense briefly took the NFL by storm when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. However, defenses quickly figured him out, which led to him going back to college.

Incognito thinks that Kelly is struggling because he’s not willing to admit to himself that he might not be as clever as he thinks he is.

“I think Chip Kelly, his issue is, he thinks he’s smarter than everybody, and he’s going to let you know that he’s smarter than everybody,” Incognito said.

“But in the NFL, there’s a lot of smart guys, and there’s a lot of great players. So, this (expletive) offense that he’s running is not working. Chip needs to look himself in the mirror and ask himself about the personnel decisions they’ve made, the offensive line that they’ve trotted out there.”

Is Kelly Close to Getting Fired?

The Raiders might have the worst offense in the NFL, which is a problem when your offensive coordinator is paid more than anybody else in his position. The team clearly believed in Kelly, but it was a big swing and a miss.

There is no reason to keep him around going forward. They can’t bring him back next season, and they might as well put in a different playcaller to see if they can breathe life into the offense. Head coach Pete Carroll’s seat has to be scorching hot right now, so sacrificing Kelly might buy him some time, unless the Raiders are content with keeping the coaching staff intact until after the season.
