Former Raiders Head Coach Bill Callahan Fired by Titans Along with Son

The Las Vegas Raiders got back in the win column in Week 6, as they snapped a four-game losing streak by handing the Tennessee Titans a 20-10 defeat. While this victory was a big deal for the Raiders, the loss ultimately led to chaos for the Titans, as they opted to fire head coach Brian Callahan in the wake of this defeat.

Despite taking over just last season, Callahan has already found himself out of a job, as Tennessee decided it was not improving enough under his lead. Senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy is taking over as the team’s interim head coach, and he revealed that Callahan wasn’t the only member of the coaching staff to be fired, as one of the Raiders’ former head coaches, Bill Callahan, was also let go by the Titans.

Bill Callahan Fired by Titans After Week 6 Loss to Raiders

When Brian was hired to be the Titans‘ new head coach back in 2024, he immediately brought his father, Bill, to town to be his offensive line coach. Bill has been working as a football coach in some capacity dating all the way back to 1978, when he was an assistant coach for Oak Lawn Community High School.

After spending 15 years as a college football coach, Bill eventually broke into the NFL as an offensive line coach with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995. Bill latched on with the Raiders in 1998 as their offensive coordinator, and he eventually became their head coach for two seasons in 2002 and 2003. While he led the team to Super Bowl XXXVII, he got fired after the 2003 season, and he ended up going back to college to be the Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach.

Bill’s stint with Nebraska ended in 2007 when he got fired, and since then, he’s returned to the NFL, working primarily as an offensive line coach. Despite being regarded as one of the best o-line coaches of all time, Bill did not get a chance to stick around in the wake of Brian’s firing, as he was also shown the exit door by the team earlier this week.

Bill’s tenure with the Raiders was brief and controversial, as he was accused by several of his former players of sabotaging the team in their aforementioned Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And yet, he remains one of the most respected coaches in the game, which is why his firing by the Titans caught attention, even when considering his son was canned as well.

Las Vegas will surely be more concerned with keeping up the positive momentum they may have found in Week 6 when they return to action this upcoming weekend. They will have a tough task on their hands, though, as they will draw a matchup against their division rival, the Kansas City Chiefs, in Week 7. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
