Former Philadelphia 76ers guard Patrick Beverley, who played a key role on the Sixers’ 2023–24 roster, was arrested in Texas on Friday on a third-degree felony assault charge, according to TMZ Sports.
The report states that Beverley allegedly assaulted an unidentified family or household member, with accusations involving impeding breath or circulation, a serious offense under Texas criminal statutes.
Beverley posted a $40,000 bond and is expected to be released the same day, according to the outlet.
Beverley’s Time With the Philadelphia 76ers
Beverley became widely known to Philadelphia fans during the 2023–24 NBA season, when he joined the Sixers as a veteran defensive specialist and locker-room voice under former head coach Nick Nurse.
In 47 games with Philadelphia, Beverley averaged 6.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists, while shooting 32.1% from three. His gritty play, defensive intensity, and outspoken personality resonated with the Philadelphia fan base, earning him steady minutes alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris.
He was traded midseason to the Milwaukee Bucks for Cameron Payne, ending his brief but impactful stint in Philadelphia. His short stint with the Sixers included a pair of big games — a career-high-tying 26 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in a 125–116 loss to the Boston Celtics and a season-high 11 assists and 17 points against the Denver Nuggets.
Arrest Follows Months of Controversy for Former Sixers Guard
The arrest in Texas is the latest major incident involving the veteran guard, who has been at the center of several controversies since leaving the Sixers.
Beverley has not played in an NBA game since May 2, 2024, when he was involved in a heated altercation with Indiana Pacers fans during the playoffs. Video captured Beverley hitting a woman in the head with a basketball, then demanding another ball from a separate fan and throwing it forcefully back into the crowd.
The NBA suspended Beverley for four games, a penalty he has not yet served, and the two Pacers fans involved filed a civil lawsuit alleging physical pain, emotional distress, humiliation, medical expenses and lost wages.
Unable to secure an NBA contract heading into the 2024–25 season, Beverley signed with Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball League. That stay ended abruptly as well. The team suspended him in February before parting ways entirely.
Beverley’s Arrest Comes Days After Klay Thompson Called Him Out
Beverley’s arrest occurred shortly after he faced backlash for comments made on a podcast about Megan Thee Stallion and Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson for using crude language.
Beverley and former NBA guard Jason Williams used explicit language on the Hoopin’ N Hollerin’ Podcast, suggesting that dating a powerful woman can impact a player’s performance.
“Referring to my girlfriend as a ‘p*y’ is disgusting and disturbing,”** Thompson wrote. “How would y’all feel if I referred to your wives that way? Do better.”
Future Unclear for Former Sixers Guard
With a felony charge pending, a civil lawsuit ongoing, a four-game NBA suspension yet to be served, and multiple off-court controversies trailing him, Beverley’s future in professional basketball is highly uncertain.
The former NBA guard has yet to issue a public comment on the arrest.
