The Houston Texans worked hard on upgrading their offensive line this offseason, as it was one of their biggest weaknesses during the 2024 campaign. However, one player who the team was hoping would take a step forward this season, Blake Fisher, has continued to struggle during training camp, leading to a prediction that he could lose his starting job with the team.
A second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Fisher struggled mightily as a rookie, leaving folks to wonder whether or not the team should try to find a replacement for him over the offseason. To this point, Fisher remains entrenched as the team’s starting right tackle, but if he doesn’t get his act together soon, his standing with the team could be in danger.
Blake Fisher Predicted to be on the Hot Seat Entering 2025 Campaign
Fisher spent three seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, immediately winning the starting left tackle job as a true freshman. While he ended up suffering a knee injury that held him out for most of the 2021 campaign, Fisher returned and held down the fort at left tackle for the next two seasons with Notre Dame.
Considering how he was a starter right from the get-go, it shouldn’t be too hard to deduce that Fisher has tons of potential. Add in the fact that he can play at either tackle spot, as evidenced by his move to right tackle upon finding his way to the NFL, and on paper, Fisher is an ideal fit with the Texans, both now and for their long-term future.
The transition to the pros was difficult for Fisher in 2024, though, and things aren’t going any better for him during training camp currently. After he got subbed from practice early on Tuesday thanks to a false start penalty, Devon Platana predicted that Fisher’s job could be in danger if his training camp woes continue.
“Even though he still has three years remaining on his rookie contract, Fisher’s future in Houston is far from secure,” Platan wrote for House of Houston. “Failing to turn things around in training camp, and especially in the regular season, could see him booted from the Texans’ future plans sooner rather than later.”
What Should the Texans Do with Blake Fisher?

In an ideal world, Fisher finds his footing in his second season and cements himself as a key piece of the Texans’ future. Given what we saw in 2024 and what we have seen so far in training camp, there’s no guarantee that will happen, though. If Fisher can’t find his footing with Houston, the front office is going to have to make sure they have a contingency plan or two in place.
For now, Fisher will continue to be given every opportunity to earn the starting job because the Texans invested a high draft pick on him just over a year ago. If he can’t turn things around, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Houston make a move to shore up their offensive line depth at the very least before the season starts.
