Former Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks are making noise all across the NFL, and now two from last season are teaming up together as members of the Indianapolis Colts.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported on Tuesday, October 14, that Brett Rypien will ink a deal with Indy following the loss of Anthony Richardson to the injured reserve list (IR) with a broken bone in his face.
“The Colts plan to sign veteran quarterback Brett Rypien to the practice squad, per sources,” Fowler wrote on X. “Rypien, last with Cincinnati, provides depth for Indy’s QB room with Anthony Richardson to IR.”
Richardson, who lost his starting job to former Vikings QB Daniel Jones during the preseason, suffered the accidental injury when an elastic stretch band snapped and hit him in the face, fracturing his orbital bone.
Jones will be out a minimum of four games. As a result, the Colts elevated Riley Leonard into the position of QB2 behind Jones and opened up a spot on the practice squad for Rypien.
Daniel Jones Has Led Colts to Best Record in NFL Through 6 Games

Both Rypien and Jones were in Minnesota’s QB room last year, with Jones joining following his mid-season release from the New York Giants.
Neither played a snap for the Vikings before switching teams. However, Rypien was an integral part of game planning and preparation for much of the season and frequently ran the scout team offense.
Minnesota purportedly wanted Jones to return, though had he done so it would have been with the understanding that the team intended to roll with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, despite the fact he had never started an NFL game before in his career.
Instead, Jones took a $14 million offer from the Colts for 2025 and beat out Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft, heading into his third season in the league.
Indianapolis is 5-1 this season, which is the best record in the AFC and tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the best record in the entire NFL. Jones is completing nearly 72 percent of his passes for 1,502 yards, eight TDs and three INTs. He has also tallied 76 rushing yards and four scores on the ground.
Sam Darnold, Seahawks Tied for First Place in NFC West

Also playing well is Sam Darnold, who started all season for the Vikings in 2024 and led the team to a 14-3 record, plus a trip to the playoffs.
Darnold inked a three-year contract worth just over $100 million this offseason to join the Seattle Seahawks. The team is 4-2 and in a three-way tie for the lead in the NFC West Division.
Darnold has completed nearly 71 percent of his passes for 1,541 yards, 11 TDs and three INTs. He has rushed for 40 yards on the year.
Meanwhile, McCarthy has played just two games, sitting out the last three with a high ankle sprain. The Vikings (3-2) are coming off their bye this week and will host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, October 19.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell would not commit Monday to starting McCarthy or to rolling with backup Carson Wentz, who is 2-1 since McCarthy went down.
