For the second time this year, Adrian Peterson found himself in handcuffs.
The former great Minnesota Vikings running back, and 2012 NFL MVP, was booked on DWI and a charge of unlawful carrying of weapons in Sugar Land, Texas, a suburb of Houston, on Sunday morning.
Peterson last played in the NFL in 2021 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks yet is best remembered for his tenure in Minnesota, where he posted seven seasons of at least 1,200 rushing yards. Included among those was his 2,097-yard campaign in 2012 that both earned him the MVP and helped the Vikings reach the playoffs.
This Was Adrian Peterson’s Second Alleged DWI Arrest In 2025
Peterson spent Sunday night in Fort Bend County Jail in Southeast Texas on $3,000 bond after he was picked up for suspicion of DWI and the weapons charge. According to CNN, the unlawful weapon Peterson was carrying was a gun.
But this is not his first alcohol-related arrest even of this year. Peterson was booked by police in Minnesota after the Vikings’ draft party during the spring for suspicion of DWI.
Officials said he blew a 0.14 BAC, above the legal limit of 0.08 after they stopped him while he was clocked going 83 mph in a 55 mph zone at about 3 a.m. CT.
Vikings fans may not be surprised by Peterson’s recent fall from grace, especially since he was suspended for nearly the entire 2014 NFL season — he played one game and rushed for 75 yards — after he was arrested for reckless assault. Peterson was found to have used a wooden switch to reprimand his then-4-year-old son.
Peterson was also reportedly removed from an airplane after his wife alleged that he had verbally and physically assaulted her in 2022, though no charges were filed.
Adrian Peterson’s Off-Field Issues Likely Won’t Keep Him Out Of The Hall of Fame
Peterson may need to seek help — since he is only 40 years old — but he also still remains on track to have a bust enshrined at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the not-so-distant future.
Peterson, of course, was one of the best running backs of his era, who came out of the small town of East Palestine, Texas to Oklahoma and ultimately the Vikings before bouncing around with a handful of teams after leaving Minnesota after the 2015 NFL season.
Peterson is fifth all time in rushing yards (14,918), fourth in rushing touchdowns (120) — for now, until Derrick Henry inevitably passes him — and has by far the most rushing yards in Vikings history (11,747) nearly twice as many that of No. 2 Robert Smith (6,818).
So even though his fall from grace has been embarrassing to many of his fans, and undoubtedly to Peterson himself, there is not a morality clause for Football Hall of Fame voters to abide by — even though Peterson lost nearly a whole season due to the incident with his son.
That means Vikings fans, and fans of Peterson’s in general, will likely see him enshrined in the Canton, Ohio-based Hall of Fame in the late summer of 2027 or 2028 at the latest.
