Giannis Makes Major Personal Decision Amid New Knicks Report

For months now, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks has been in question. It began with Shams Charania of ESPN reporting the two-time MVP was open to exploring possibilities on a new team, and was recently marked by Charania writing that an Antetokounmpo move to the New York Knicks was a possibility this offseason.

Also recently, another piece of news broke that could be telling on Antetokounmpo’s future, whether it be in Milwaukee, another NBA city, or somewhere else completely. According to To Vima, a Greek newspaper, Antetokounmpo’s family is reportedly making a full-time move to Athens.

“NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo’s family, namely, his wife Mariah and their four pre-school children, has reportedly moved to Athens on a permanent basis, the To Vima staff wrote in an article on their website.Antetokounmpo’s wife and children have already moved into a brand new futuristic-looking and custom-built apartment complex in Athens’ ‘diplomatic row’ neighborhood, Paleo Psychiko.”

According to the report, Antetokounmpo will stay in Milwaukee, while his wife and kids will move to the star’s hometown.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Family In Greece

Antetokounmpo spent much of his summer in Greece. Notably, he played in the 2025 EuroBasket tournament near his home country, leading the team to a bronze medal. Antetokounmpo was also in Athens during the Bucks media day, as his trip back to Milwaukee was delayed due to a positive COVID test.

Antetokounmpo is now back in the States, preparing for the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season, but his arrival comes on the heels of news of his family’s move. They are set to live in a complex with Antetokounmpo’s brothers and mother. His wife reportedly weighed living in both Milwaukee and Athens, with the European destination winning out.

According to theGracecolumn ofTo Vima’, after months of discussions by the entire Antetokounmpo clan, Mariah was asked if she preferred Milwaukee, where Giannis plays for the NBA’s Bucks, or Athens, with the nod going to the Greek capital, the To Vima article added.

The report also said Antetokounmpo will travel back and forth from the two cities this year based on the Bucks’ schedule.

Future With The Bucks, Knicks, Or Elsewhere

News of Antetokounmpo’s family relocating came just a day before Charania’s latest report. While it’s hard to pinpoint what the move means for his playing future, it marks another time the 2021 Finals MVP has made headlines in recent months

According to Charania, who had previously made multiple reports on Antetokounmpo’s uncertainty in Milwaukee, a deal was nearly made over the offseason. While it’s hard to imagine the star in any uniform besides the Bucks’, Charania wrote that he was interested in a move to the New York Knicks

Several teams were discussed internally, but one emerged as the only place Antetokounmpo wanted to play outside of Milwaukee: the New York Knicks, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN,Charania wrote.

The Bucks picked up the Knicks’ call on Antetokounmpo, and the sides engaged in conversations for a window of time in August, league sources said, but the teams never got traction on a deal.

New York would have needed to send over one of the biggest trade packages in NBA history to land Antetokounmpo, and as seen, a deal wasn’t made. That doesn’t rule out a trade in the future, but one will likely not come until either Milwaukee decides it is time or the star asks to be moved himself.

As a potential restricted free agent in 2027, much has been made of Antetokounmpo’s future, but the Knicks now stand out as his preferred landing spot. It’s difficult to decipher how his family’s move plays a part, but for the time being, the Bucks are doing everything they can to keep him in town.
