The New York Giants made the national news ahead of Week 7, as NFL insider Field Yates reported two contract restructures, and the moves immediately fueled wide receiver trade rumors.
“The Giants have restructured the contracts of CB Paulson Adebo and S Jevon Holland, creating just over $4.8M in cap space for 2025,” Yates reported on Wednesday, October 15.
Later that day, multiple beat reporters expressed that the Giants are expected to target a big-name pass-catcher via trade. SNY’s Connor Hughes even attached NYG “sources” to this rumor.
“Sources: Giants aggressive in pursuit of adding a receiver before trade deadline, believed to be ‘big game hunting,’” Hughes relayed on X.
In a follow-up article with SNY, he added that “multiple sources familiar with the discussions told SNY that New York has been aggressive in its pursuit of adding a pass catcher for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.”
Hughes went on to note the injuries to starting wide receivers Malik Nabers (knee, out for season) and Darius Slayton (hamstring), labeling them a “threat” to Dart’s development.
“An influx of talent at the position could maximize Dart’s progress,” Hughes explained. “General manager Joe Schoen, sources say, is trying to make that happen.”
Giants Connected to 3 Specific WR Trade Targets Amid Latest Rumors
Within his article, Hughes highlighted three specific wide receivers who would qualify as “big game hunting.”
“Chris Olave ([New Orleans] Saints), Jaylen Waddle ([Miami] Dolphins) and Jakobi Meyers ([Las Vegas] Raiders) are among the top potential targets,” the SNY insider wrote.
Continuing: “The challenge with acquiring Olave or Waddle, according to sources, lies in persuading their current teams to part ways. A directive from ownership, front office shakeups or significant draft compensation might be enough to shift the conversation.”
Hughes called Waddle “the most high-profile addition” of the three, but the Dolphins have yet to confirm that they are selling in 2025.
On the morning of October 15, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the Raiders are willing to listen to trade offers on Meyers, but he added that they are “not actively trying to move him.” Meyers requested a trade just before the start of the season, but his request was seemingly denied.
Then there’s Olave, who has battled concussions throughout his career, but is also a clear WR1 when healthy.
Waddle is under contract through 2028 with void years extending beyond that, while Olave is under contract through 2026, and Meyers needs a new deal after 2025.
Each of these three has experience serving as a top wide receiver option in an offense. Without question, a trade like this would be very beneficial for both Dart and head coach Brian Daboll.
More on Giants Contract Restructure News in Week 7
In order to free up some cap space, the Giants chose to restructure two 2025 signings. According to ESPN NYG beat reporter Jordan Raanan, neither of these choices should be all that surprising to fans, despite the unexpected timing of the news.
“The Giants were just $2.5 million under the salary cap entering today, per NFLPA records,” Raanan commented on X. “Some restructures were going to be necessary to get through the season even without any significant trades.”
He also stated that “Adebo and Holland’s contracts were fairly obvious targets.” And that the “plan is for them to be with the team for multiple years. So, simply moving some money down the road.”
Holland and Adebo have both been welcome additions to the Giants’ secondary so far this year.
