The New York Giants are running out of time to get All-Pro offensive tackle Andrew Thomas back healthy, and back on the field for a colossal Week 1 clash against the division rival Washington Commanders.
Even Thomas doesn’t sound convinced that he’ll be in the lineup when the regular season kicks off.
“I’m not sure yet,” Thomas told reporters, when asked if he thinks he’ll be ready to go Week 1. “I haven’t really done a ton of reps. I’ve done some indy (individual drills), took some one-on-one reps. I’m just trying to progress slowly, so we’ll see. But like I said, I’m not making any projections right now.”
Thomas is still working his way back from foot surgery, but even after being activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list might not have enough time to get to the point he’s able to suit up for the season opener.
“Not bad,” Thomas said, when asked how he felt after going through individual drills at practice. “Every time you go out there and do something new, there’s some soreness that comes with that. But I responded pretty well, and I’m feeling good today. And then I’ll get on the field tomorrow to do some more running. I know everybody else is off, but that’s just the plan that they have for me right now, to get some extra stuff on Friday and keep progressing.”
Thomas is a critical piece along the Giants’ offensive line, but given that he has yet to take part in any team drills this summer, it may still be some time before he’s able to get back into game action.
“Iâd say the guys that have been practicing, (James Hudson) Hud and (Marcus) Mbow, have been doing a very good job of playing their respective roles, and thatâs what you expect out of a team,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters, of several injured Giants players. “Obviously, you want every one of your top players to be out there, and heâs doing everything he can do at this point in time to keep improving, and the guys that are behind him on the depth chart are also doing a good job, but, of course, you would love to have all your top guys out there.”
Giants Tight End Theo Johnson’s Status Remains Unclear

GettyNew York Giants’ tight end Theo Johnson can enjoy a breakout second season because of one skill.
New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson is also working his way back from an unspecified injury.
Johnson remains day-to-day, but hasn’t been back on the field since Week 2 of the preseason.
Fortunately for the Giants, tight end Daniel Bellinger had a strong training camp and preseason, and Chris Manhertz and Thomas Fidone are also on the roster, providing quality depth should Johnson be forced to miss any time.
The 6-foot-6 and 265-pound Johnson caught 29 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown, as a rookie last season, and could figure to play a significant role in the passing game this season, especially operating in the space created by the attention defenses must pay wide receiver Malik Nabers deep downfield.
