The 2025 MLB Trade Deadline is fast approaching on July 31, 2025, and the San Francisco Giants are expected to make some big moves.Â
Firmly in the thick of the National League playoff race, the Giants will be buyers barring something disastrous in the next 10 days, and theyâre going to try to get the best talent they can.Â
But could the Giants get the biggest trade chip of all?
In an article called, âMLB’s top 50 trade deadline candidates: There’s a new No. 1â, ESPN insiders Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan named Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez the No. 1 trade deadline candidate in all of baseball.Â
And they named the Giants as a fit for Suarez.Â
Suarez is currently leading the National League in home runs with 35 and the whole MLB in RBI with 85. His .257 average would also rank second among Giants qualified hitters, behind only Heliot Ramos.Â
Acquiring him would be a season-altering move for the Giants lineup.
Would the DBacks Trade Suarez?Â
Just two years removed from a World Series appearance in 2023, itâs been a relatively disappointing season for Arizona, who sits in fourth place in the National League West.Â
But theyâre not actually that far out of a playoff spot, sitting only 4.5 games back of the third National League Wild Card.Â
So theyâre not going to have the kind of trade deadline where they unload everyone with value. The season hasnât been bad enough to warrant that kind of strategy.Â
However, Passan and McDaniel point out that Suarez is a great candidate to be traded anyway. Heâs 34 years old, so who knows how much of his physical prime is left. His defense has taken a step back. And he is in a contract year, so the DBacks may be losing him in free agency anyway.Â
Plus, they have Jordan Lawlar looking ready to play third base in the Big Leagues. Heâs hit .319 this season in AAA Reno.Â
Unless the DBacks go on a long winning or losing streak, expect them to approach the deadline with a neither selling nor buying approach. Suarez is the perfect player to sell to a contender while they can still get a return for him.Â
How Does Suarez Fit in San Francisco?Â
The bottom line is that the Giants need more hitting.Â
The Giants offense has consistently let down the pitching staff with subpar performances, especially when it comes to hitting with runners in scoring position.Â
Case in point: their first game back from the All-Star Break on Friday July 19, 2025, they recorded 11 hits but scored no runs. That canât happen.Â
Going after the MLB leader in RBIs to solve this problem makes too much sense.Â
The issue is where Suarez fits defensively. The left side of the infield has two established defenders in Matt Chapman and Willy Adames. Suarez is not going to get more than a spot start at third.Â
The next logical place would be for Suarez to DH or learn first base. The Giants already have a DH-who-eventually-needs-to-learn-first-base in Rafael Devers. A move there would also likely prevent Wilmer Flores, who has been one of the Giantsâ best hitters this season, from getting any at bats.Â
The best move might be for Suarez to play second base, if the Giants feel comfortable slotting him there. Casey Schmitt has played like the second baseman of the future this season, but he could shift to a utility role for the rest of 2025 if the Giants want to go all-in chasing a World Series with Suarez.Â
What do you think, Giants fans? Should San Francisco trade for Eugenio Suarez?Â
