The New York Giants are banged up in their defensive secondary, and they seem unlikely to get healthy in time for their Week 9 game Sunday.
No. 1 cornerback Paulson Adebo is unlikely to play against the San Francisco 49ers while he is dealing with a sprained MCL that is leaving his status as week to week.
Adebo is in the first of a three-year contract he signed with the Giants after starting his career with the New Orleans Saints. He has 48 tackles, 41 solo tackles, and one tackle for loss while playing seven games, but he missed the Giants’ 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
New York (2-6) has lost two straight and three of its past four games.
The Giants Claimed A CB Because They Are Thin At DB
Much-maligned 2023 first-round pick Deonte Banks is likely to make his second straight start Sunday, but he is going to be the mainstay after a rash of injuries that are plaguing the Giants secondary.
Adebo’s injury is more serious than initial thought, but No. 2 cornerback Cor’Dale Flott sustained a concussion in Philadelphia on Sunday and left the game.
So the Giants claimed Jarrick Bernard-Converse off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. He seems likely to fill in the special-teams roles of the players who will ascend to fill in for Adebo, and potentially Flott if he can’t get out of the concussion protocol in time to play.
By the end of the game, Banks was joined by Dru Phillips and rookie seventh-round draft pick Korie Black — each played more than 50 percent of New York’s defensive snaps against the Eagles. They are likely to be heavily involved again.
The Giants’ Depleted Secondary Won’t Be Facing The 49ers’ Best Either
The Giants pass defense has been gashed over the past five quarters, since they have allowed six passing touchdowns to the Eagles and Denver Broncos.
But the Giants may catch a break, since the 49ers offense has also been decimated by injuries, especially to its skill-position players. Both of San Francisco’s quarterbacks, Brock Purdy and Mac Jones, are banged up, star wideout Brandon Aiyuk is on the PUP list, plus Nos. 2 and 3 wideouts Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings may not play Sunday either.
Despite the wide receiver injuries, the Niners still rank second in the NFL in passing yards per game (259.3), which could be a problem for the Giants’ 24th-ranked pass defense — especially after they allowed 427 total yards of offense to the Eagles.
The Giants may have a hard time defending All-Pro tight end George Kittle, who had his first big game of the season with four catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in Week 8 against the Houston Texans. The Giants gave up two TDs to Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert last weekend.
San Francisco has also been leaning heavily on All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, who has topped 100 all-purpose yards in all but one of the Niners’ eight games this season. He averaged 6.2 yards per touch Sunday against Houston but only registered eight carries and three receptions, a huge reason why the Niners lost.
