Giants Injury Downgraded to ‘Out’ Ahead of Week 5 vs. Saints

There was New York Giants injury news on Saturday, October 4, ahead of the Week 5 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

“LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring) has been downgraded to OUT and will not travel with the Giants to New Orleans,” NYG team reporter Dan Salomone revealed a little over 24 hours before kickoff.

Flannigan-Fowles was initially labeled “questionable” to suit up on Friday, but New York Daily News reporter Pat Leonard noted that the core special teamer “appears to have aggravated his hammy [injury].”

After the news, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reminded that Flannigan-Fowles has “struggled to stay healthy. He popped up with a hamstring injury yesterday after missing Weeks 2 and 3 with a calf injury.”

“Already was expecting a third [practice] squad elevation for LB Neville Hewitt,” Duggan added, hinting that Hewitt’s promotion is a near guarantee now.

After signing with the Giants in free agency, Flannigan-Fowles has only appeared in 2 games, logging 15 snaps on defense and 34 snaps on special teams. He was credited with 1 tackle in Week 4, but does not have any notable statistics otherwise.

Giants Bring in Several Free Agents for Friday Tryout Before Week 5

In other news, the Giants hosted several free agents on Friday, October 3. Leonard relayed the “tryout list” on X, per his sources.

The players were quarterbacks Seth Henigan and Tanner Mordecai, and wide receivers Samori Toure, Mike Woods, Rakim Jarrett and Brandon Johnson.

Henigan was just released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 29. He’s a 6-foot-3 undrafted rookie out of Memphis who appeared in 50 games in college as a four-year starter.

The young signal-caller threw for over 14,000 yards and 100-plus touchdowns at Memphis, completing passes at a percentage of 64.0%.

Mordecai last played for the San Francisco 49ers this summer, but was waived with an injury in August. He’s a 6-foot-2 second-year UDFA who started for Wisconsin during his final collegiate season.

Opposite of Hennigan, Mordecai transferred around a lot at the collegiate level. He spent time with Oklahoma, SMU and Wisconsin, appearing in a total of 46 games. So, both of these two QBs had a lot of experience in college.

Mordecai threw for just under 10,000 yards and 85 touchdowns, at a completion percentage of 66.4%.

As for the wide receiver workouts, interest in Toure was reported earlier this week, but this is the first mention of the other three pass-catchers.

Toure is a 6-foot-1 veteran who spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. He has 160 career receiving yards at 27 years old.

Jarrett is a similarly bodied WR at 6-foot, and saw a lot of slot usage with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He accumulated 184 receiving yards over the past two seasons with TB, serving as a depth pass-catcher and part-time kick returner. Jarrett is only 24 years old.

Johnson is a 6-foot-2 wideout who has played for the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2023, he racked up 284 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. In his career, the 27-year-old has 335 receiving yards and 5 TDs.

Finally, Woods is a former Cleveland Browns wide receiver who stands at 6-foot-1. He’s 25 years old and has recorded 12 career receptions for 110 yards. Woods and Jarrett have contributed as special teamers throughout their respective careers as well.
