It’s quickly becoming clear the New York Giants‘ 2025 season won’t be much different from the previous two.
Yet, with the Giants locked into last place in in the NFC East again, and the trade deadline on the horizon Tuesday, franchise EDGE rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux isn’t letting the potential distraction of being dealt get to him — at least publicly.
Thibodeaux said he “wants to be” a member of the Giants when asked about potentially being traded after the Giants’ third straight loss, 34-24, to the San Francisco 49ers.
Thibodeaux has been the subject of trade rumors, with rival clubs trying to pluck the 2022 first-round pick of the Giants before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The Giants have reportedly shut down trade rumors centering around Thibodeaux.
Thibodeaux has one year remaining on his contract, since the Giants exercised his fifth-year option last year. Thibodeaux has 2.5 sacks, but none over the Giants’ past five games where they have gone 1-4.
Kayvon Thibodeaux on Trade Rumors: ‘I Want To Be Here’
The Giants have a strong collection of talent, especially on defense where their four-headed pass rushing monster of Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence and rookie Abdul Carter was supposed to make them a formidable foe in the NFC East.
But despite Burns’ All-Pro caliber year (11 sacks), the Giants defense ranks just 28th in points-allowed per game (27.7). New York has surrendered 35 points per game over their losing streak, which has all but eliminated it from playoff contention.
So with Thibodeaux underperforming, and potentially being valuable to rival clubs for his game-wrecking ability, his name has come up. But he’s more focused on trying to help the Giants turn the ship around.
“I just gotta keep getting better. We’ve got a long season ahead,” Thibodeaux said. “It’s eight games left. We’ve still got a chance to pull this thing out, so I’m just focused on getting better and contributing to the team as much as I can.”
He was then asked if he wants to be with the Giants and offered a strong response.
“I want to be here,” Thibodeaux said.
Kayvon Thibodeaux Has A Good Perspective Despite The Giants’ Losing
The Giants made the playoffs in Thibodeaux’s rookie season, which also was head coach Brian Daboll’s first year at the helm. Yet, fast forward three years, and very little has gone right for Big Blue.
But even though the Giants are effectively out of the playoff picture in November again, Thibodeaux is still focused on the bigger picture.
“I was always told you can’t really look at the position you’re in; you’ve got to look on where you’re trying to get to,” Thibodeaux said. “All your focus has got to be geared on the work that has to get done to get to the place you want to be.”
It would be easy for Thibodeaux, who played in college at Oregon and won two conference titles and played for a third in his three years there, to get frustrated with the unfamiliar feeling of losing. But he is still focused on helping the Giants push out of their ongoing funk.
“I try not to dwell in the hurt or the lows and try to stay even keeled and try to keep grinding and see how to get out of it,” Thibodeaux said.
