Giants Leaning Toward Controversial Decision on GM Joe Schoen: Report

The New York Giants appear prepared to move forward with general manager Joe Schoen at the controls despite one of the worst three-year stretches in franchise history, signaling ownership’s inclination toward continuity rather than a full-scale overhaul.

According to multiple NFL insiders — including The Athletic’s Dan Duggan and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport — have indicated that the Giants ownership “prefers” to keep Schoen in place heading into the offseason.

The move comes as Schoen prepares to steer the organization through a pivotal draft and head coaching search, even as fan frustration and external pressure mount after another disappointing campaign that saw the Giants once again be the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs.

Why Ownership Is Backing Stability Over Another Reset

Giants ownership has been burned too many times by abrupt regime changes over the past decade, and there’s a growing belief inside the building that Schoen’s personnel plan still deserves runway. From the outside, the case looks shaky — a 12–38 record across the last three seasons offers little evidence of meaningful progress.

But internally, Schoen is credited with cleaning up the cap mess he inherited, modernizing scouting and analytics processes, and finally adding blue-chip upside at premium positions in a terrific 2025 NFL Draft. The administration views the current roster as more structurally sound than when he arrived, even if the win column hasn’t reflected it yet.

There’s also the matter of organizational sequencing. The Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll and turned to Mike Kafka on an interim basis, but they’ve stopped short of detonating the front office — a strategic choice meant to avoid another total restart.

By maintaining Schoen as the anchor, ownership believes the next coaching hire will plug into an infrastructure with a defined identity, not a blank canvas. In short, they see continuity as the stabilizing force the franchise lacked through the post-Coughlin churn, and Schoen as the architect positioned to finish what he started.

How Schoen’s Return Could Shape The Giants’ Future

If Schoen remains in power — which current indications suggest — his fingerprints will define two critical decisions: selecting the next head coach and navigating a draft that may influence the Giants’ future for years to come.

Schoen’s vision will shape the coaching profile the Giants pursue: whether they chase a CEO-style leader to reset culture, an offensive mind to develop a young signal-caller, or a defensive tactician who can fix the issues that have been plaguing that side of the ball.

The expectation is that any candidate must align with Schoen’s roster-building philosophy, not challenge it — a dynamic that could narrow the field but create cleaner synergy. The draft looms just as large. With the Giants near the top of the board again, Schoen’s evaluation of talent will be scrutinized more aggressively than at any point in his tenure.

Whether New York selects a premium defender, pairs Malik Nabers with another home run threat at receiver, or trades back to accumulate capital will reflect Schoen’s long-term map — and could ultimately determine whether ownership’s patience was justified. For now, he has the runway. But the decisions ahead will either validate that trust or exhaust it once and for all.
