The talk of the New York Giants this season is the team’s quarterback room, which is packed with interesting players. The only quarterback returning to the New York Giants this year is Tommy DeVito, and he’s joined by veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and rookie Jaxson Dart.
Dart is largely expected to be the future of the franchise. New York drafted him as their No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 draft. Dart led the FBS with 1,517 passing yards and 17 touchdowns on deep passes in 2024.
Now, Dart is in the Big Apple, and the team is already making a few changes for Dart. This one has to do with his number. In college, Dart wore the No. 2, but that’s not going to be the case with the Giants. In an interview with Cllct Media, the rookie quarterback revealed that he tried to make a deal with cornerback Deonte Banks for his No. 2 jersey number, since he wore that number at Ole Miss, but Banks’ asking price was too high for him.
Now, Dart and the Giants have agreed to a number for him, and it’s No. 6. “Punter Jamie Gillan has switched to No. 12 so looks like Jaxson Dart liked how No. 6 looked on him this spring,” Dan Duggan of The Athletic noted on X.
Jaxon Dart By the Numbers
Punter Jamie Gillan had been wearing the No. 6, but now, he has switched to No. 12. “New York Giants P Jamie Gillan is now wearing number 12. Currently shared with Jordan Bly,” NFL Jersey Numbers stated on X.
This doesn’t mean Dart will be No. 6 forever. Banks’ contract is set to expire in 2027, so if he is no longer with the Giants and Dart is cooking, Dart could get his No. 2 back.
“Dart was the third quarterback in Ole Miss history to be taken in the first round. Giants fans may have heard of the other two, Eli and Archie Manning,” Dan Salomone of the Giants’ website states in a piece published in May. “Dart served as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy and went on to break Eli’s program record for career passing yards, finishing with 10,617 to eclipse the two-time Super Bowl MVP’s 10,119 in college.”
They add that, “Dart also owns Ole Miss records in wins (28) and winning percentage (.737) by a starting quarterback.”
The Future of the New York Giants
Hopefully, Dart, Wilson and the rest of the franchise will help turn the Giants around. Last season, they had a 3-14 record and were at the bottom of the NFC East last season, so there is truly nowhere to go but up.
Dart is expected be the future of the team, but for now, the Giants will likely lean on Wilson as their starting quarterback. They didn’t bring him to the Big Apple to sit on the bench. Wilson has been to two Super Bowls in his career, including Super Bowl XLVIII and Super Bowl XLIX, and won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 with the Seattle Seahawks. So, he has experience, and he seems motivated to bring some big wins to New York.
