Giants’ Mike Kafka on Future HC Opportunities After Latest Loss

When the New York Giants fired Brian Daboll, interim head coach Mike Kafka was given a legitimate chance to prove he could be the long-term answer for Big Blue.

Since then, Kafka has gone 0-4 in the interim for New York, and things aren’t trending in the right direction.

Jaxson Dart has played about as well as he did under Daboll, and the defense is just as weak after Kafka decided to fire defensive coordinator Shane Bowen and replace him with Charlie Bullen.

The odds are Kafka won’t be with the Giants in 2026, and his stint as the interim head coach has been forgettable at best.

Is it possible that Kafka is hurting his coaching future with his time with the Giants?

“I’m not really concerned about any of that stuff. That would be super-selfish of me to think about that and where we’re at in this season,” Kafka told reporters on Monday.

Mike Kafka Downplays Future Coaching Concerns

At his Monday press conference following the 29-21 loss to the Washington Commanders, Kafka was asked if he was concerned about his future coaching opportunities after this failed stint with the New York Giants.

“My only focus is on the players and the coaches and getting our guys ready to roll. We got a great opportunity ahead of us with three games left. Nothing’s more important than this game right now against Minnesota. So that’s really where our mind’s at. That’s where my mind’s at,” Kafka said over a Zoom call with reporters.

“This is the situation that I’m in and I’m going to take full advantage of it. Any opportunity I have to help this team, put my fingerprint on the team, I will.”

Kafka, in all honesty, likely wouldn’t want this team to have his fingerprints on it.

It’s been nothing but disappointment all year long for the Giants, including the last four games.

Kafka was always going to have an uphill climb to prove himself as a legitimate candidate to stay on as head coach in 2026, but the last few games have been painstaking to say the least.

Mike Kafka’s Previous Candidacy as HC

While serving as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator since 2022, Kafka received interest in head coaching opportunities.

Over the years, the former Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach interviewed with the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans for their head coaching gigs.

But after this stint with the Giants, Kafka isn’t likely to receive any interviews this upcoming cycle.

He did subtly defend himself in the same press conference, pointing out that things could have been different when you have the chance to build a team from the ground floor.

“Obviously, when you have the opportunity to do it from the start, you have a way to kind of change certain things, build the culture the way you want to build it, but we have a great team here, we have a great staff here, and I look forward to coming to work every single day,” Kafka said.

Maybe Kafka lands on his feet elsewhere on an offensive staff and builds his resume back up for another shot at a head coaching gig down the line.
