Giants Predicted to Ditch $31 Million Star Before Season Starts

The New York Giants are coming up on a new season, and it’s a do-or-die year for the team, following their rough 2024 season, which landed the Giants with a 3-14 record and at the bottom of the NFC East. Things have to change, and head coach in Brian Daboll has been doing a lot to tweak the Giants’ lineup, especially in the quarterback room.

Daboll knows that his days are numbered if he can’t turn this team around. It’s interesting that they kept him for another year after last season’s performance, but it’s hopeful to see him get another chance. Who doesn’t love second chances?

Now, while the offseason is getting shorter, there’s still time for some big trades to be made before the new season starts in September. One particular Giants player is still in the mix when it comes to possible trades, although the longer it goes, the less it seems the Giants will split with him.

A Possible Trade for the New York Giants

The regular season starts in just a few months, and some last-minutes deals are likely being put together now. In a June 21 feature for Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox names some NFL players who could be traded before September.

One of them, of course, is Giants edge Kayvon Thibodeaux. So, where would he go? Knox has him landing with either the Green Bay Packers or New England Patriots.

In the piece, Knox notes, “New York Giants pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux hasn’t quite played up to his billing as a 2022 first-round pick yet, but he’s hoping to change the narrative in 2025.”

He adds some context, with Thibodeaux stating at minicamp “I think I’m a consistent double-digit sack guy and I’ve got to do that,” via Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press.

But, it could make sense for the Giants to trade away their powerful edge. It would be a big move, but this is a team that has to make such mammoth decisions.

“If Thibodeaux is going to reach double-digit sacks for the second time in his career, he may have to find a new team,” Knox states. “The Giants traded for Brian Burns last offseason and just used the third overall pick on pass-rusher Abdul Carter.”

The Numbers Behind a Possible Trade

Knox adds that, “New York did pick up the fifth-year option on the 24-year-old’s contract, but it could erase his entire $14.8 million 2026 cap hit by trading him. That could become an attractive option if it becomes obvious that he will be third at best in the pass-rushing rotation.”

Meanwhile, quarterback Russell Wilson seems stoked to be in the fold with the Giants. He’s especially happy to play with second-year wide receiver Malik Nabers.

“I came here because of him,” Wilson said at Fanatics Fest, according to Empire Sports Media’s Anthony Rivardo. “I really wanted to play with someone who is special like him.”

He added, “Also, too, we’ve got a lot of guys who have put a lot of hard work into it. We’ve got a really good defense, rushing the passer. We’ve got a lot of dudes. That’s a good thing.”
