The New York Giants are all the talk in the NFL right now because of their quarterback room, which is jam packed. But, of course, quarterbacks aren’t the only important position in football. Even though the Giants seem pretty set with their signal-callers, there are some other positions they could boost before the season begins.
Brian Daboll is back with the Giants, and this will likely be his final year if he doesn’t deliver. Last season, their record was 3-14, which is pretty unacceptable, so hopefully he can turn things around.
So, looking at the team’s current lineup, there one position that they could really enhance with a big trade deal. As it turns out, there’s one player who could be available for a key position that the Giants need, and a deal could be made during this offseason.
Giants Told They Should Trade for Star Tight End, No Excuses
In a feature published on Saturday, July 5, in Gmen HQ, Tommy Jaggi discusses the Miami Dolphins sending their Pro Bowl tight end, Jonnu Smith, to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade that also involved Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick. He goes so far to say that this opens up an opportunity for the Giants.
“With Jonnu Smith packing his bags for Pittsburgh, the Steelers suddenly have a surplus of talent a the tight end position,” he notes, adding that the Steelers now have Smith, Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward. “Though offensive coordinator Arthur Smith loves his tight ends, the Steelers may be willing to part with one after securing Smith… and there’s a player Schoen should already be on the phone asking about.”
Smith has recorded 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also, as mentioned, a Pro Bowler and was actually the only Pro Bowler on the Dolphins’ squad in 2024. So, he could be their main guy.
With that in mind, Jaggi proposes that the Giants trade for Freiermuth. He says that although according to Over the Cap, the Giants have just over $3.8 million in cap space, there are still some ways this trade could go down. “Restructuring Andrew Thomas’ deal that he signed in 2023, for instance, would instantly free up over $12.5 million,” he states. “The Giants could also save an instant $3.6 million by cutting Rakeem Nunez-Roches.”
What’s In It for the Giants
So, would this deal be worth it to the Giants? Jaggi thinks so. He says that getting “Freiermuth would give the Giants a significant upgrade over the lackluster combination of Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger.”
“Though Freiermuth is average at best as a blocker, he recorded at least 60 receptions in three of four seasons,” he adds. “The only time he fell short of this mark was in 2023 when he played only 12 games after dealing with concussions and soft tissue injuries.”
He also calls Freiermuth “a quarterback’s best friend” and says that he already as solid chemistry with Wilson, which would make a big difference this season.
There’s no official word on whether the Steelers will be willing to part with Freiermuth, but if they do, the Giants could be a great landing spot.
