Giants RB Cam Skattebo Addresses Fanbase After Key Week 5 Mistake

In some ways, it felt like the New York Giants literally handed their Week 5 outing to the New Orleans Saints, with five turnovers, including a costly red zone fumble by running back Cam Skattebo.

Although Skattebo wasn’t the only player to make a key mistake, his fumble was returned for a touchdown, so it certainly stands out as a glaring moment that swung the game in the Saints’ favor. The Giants were knocking on the door of a go-ahead fourth-quarter touchdown drive at the time, and then New Orleans practically doubled their lead in the blink of an eye.

After the game on October 5, Skattebo addressed this blunder head-on, sending a message to the NYG fanbase.

“Sorry giants fans!!! I’ll be better for yall!!!! Love!!!” Skattebo posted on X.

Despite the pivotal Week 5 mistake, fans seemed to appreciate Skattebo’s public show of accountability. In a little under 24 hours, the post has over 49,000 likes and approximately 2.4 million views.

The rookie has become an instant fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Moments like this continue to endear Skattebo in the eyes of Big Blue supporters.

Ex-Giants Fan Favorite Responds to Cam Skattebo’s Public Show of Accountability After Week 5

Skattebo’s post didn’t just drum up likes. Countless fans also responded in the comment section, including ex-Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh.

“You don’t need to apologize,” Pugh replied. “This is football. Mistakes happen. Keep grinding. Keep being you. Future is too bright to worry about one play.”

Similarly, fans rushed to support the promising first-year playmaker.

“We got your back Skat!!! All love keep punishing them out there!” One wrote.

Another said: “Great show of accountability. I know you’ll do better the next time around. All love #44.”

And a third wrote: “Keep working Skat! Every person on this earth [expletive] up from time to time. Keep grinding. I’m rooting for you. It’s one game. Put it in the past.”

There were many other reactions with a similar theme. And this speaks to what fans want to hear from their athletes.

It’s okay if you make a mistake — it’s human nature, and no person is perfect — so long as you own it. Skattebo and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart both seem to understand that, and Giants fans seem to appreciate that they do.

Skattebo Bottled Up vs. Saints, Still Remains a Focal Point of Giants’ Passing Attack

It wasn’t the best game for Skattebo on the ground. On 15 carries, the rookie fought for 59 rushing yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

Notably, this performance was still more efficient than veteran Devin Singletary, who ran for just 3.3 yards per carry, but Skattebo’s true impact has been seen in the passing game.

In Week 5 versus the Saints, the scrappy Giants halfback caught 6 of his 7 targets for 45 receiving yards. This was the second-largest receiving total on the team, behind backup tight end Daniel Bellinger (4 for 52 yards).

Giants receivers really struggled to get going in Week 5, which was a problem. Darius Slayton led the way with 3 catches for 31 yards, but he had a miserable outing that included an integral fumble, too.

After Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson caught 5 passes for 30 yards, and Beaux Collins caught 1 pass for 7 yards. Former third-round pick Jalin Hyatt was held without a catch despite 3 targets.

Things won’t get any easier in Week 6, as the Giants will have a short week to prepare for the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football.
