The New York Giants’ injury list is growing at training camp, but the status of rookie running back Cam Skattebo was first on the agenda when head coach Brian Daboll took the podium to provide updates on August 2.
“He’s working back from rehabbing something,” the perennially coy Daboll said regarding Skattebo on Saturday morning. Adding: “Had a little bit of a setback yesterday, but won’t do anything today.”
Skattebo looked notably frustrated while leaving practice with a trainer on Friday, slamming his helmet to the ground.
Per multiple members of the Giants beat, the unconfirmed rumor is that Skattebo could be dealing with a hamstring injury, although Daboll chose to keep the cause of his absence a mystery once again on August 2. “You know I’m not going to get into injuries right now,” the NYG head coach replied when asked directly about Skattebo’s hamstring.
On the bright side, Daboll was willing to note that this is more of a “day-by-day” injury than a “multi-week” absence, which implies that Skattebo’s current issue is nothing major at this time.
Giants Have Double-Digit Injury Absences at Training Camp on Saturday
Along with Skattebo, there were at least nine other injury absences at Giants training camp on Saturday, meaning 10 total. And that’s not including starting right guard Greg Van Roten, who has been missing due to the birth of his second child.
“CB Cor’Dale Flott and TE Thomas Fidone also among the injured players who won’t practice,” The Athletic’s Dan Duggan relayed on August 2. Later, the beat reporter added: “Other players not spotted: WR Darius Slayton, DL Elijah Chatman, DL Jordon Riley, DL DJ Davidson, OLB Chauncey Golston, ILB Ty Summers and CB Korie Black.”
Just when it started to look like the Giants were getting healthier, the dog days of summer have produced several ailments.
On Saturday, reserve running back Rushawn Baker also suffered what Duggan described as an “apparent knee injury.” Duggan also voiced that Baker’s injury “doesn’t look good.”
However, later in practice, there was a positive update on Baker.
“Baker is now back on the side with a trainer,” Duggan reported. “Rarely see a player return after going inside.”
Hopefully, the Giants will begin to get healthier as they approach the first preseason game.
Giants WR Montrell Washington Continues to Form Chemistry With Rookie QB Jaxson Dart on Saturday
On the second-team offense, Jaxson Dart and Montrell Washington have linked up for multiple highlight-reel completions over the past few days of training camp. That was the case again on August 2.
“It was another day for the Jaxson Dart and Montrell Washington show,” team reporter Dan Salomone wrote after practice. “Once again, the rookie quarterback and third-year wide receiver connected on a long touchdown during 1-on-1 drills to start the day.”
“Not to be outdone, Russell Wilson then threw a touchdown to a leaping Malik Nabers in the end zone from the same distance,” Salomone added.
The other offensive highlight on Saturday was a deep ball from Wilson intended for Wan’Dale Robinson that was initially broken up by nickelback Dru Phillips. The ball deflected up in the air, only to land in the arms of Robinson on the ground.
Undrafted rookie WR Jordan Bly also caught a sliding touchdown from Dart.
After a strong defensive showing on Friday, with four interceptions, the offense appeared to win the day on Saturday, as Salomone noted they were “clean in the turnover department.”
