Giants’ RB Room Gets Lift With Tracy Jr. Available After MNF Exit

The New York Giants will have Tyrone Tracy Jr. back in the fold for this week’s contest against the Washington Commanders.

According to head coach Mike Kafka, Tracy is “good to go” after he suffered a hip injury against the New England Patriots that forced him to leave during the fourth quarter. Fortunately, the injury was not as serious as feared, and Tracy will return this week.

Tracy Suffered a Hip Contusion vs. New England

With just over ten minutes to go in the fourth quarter at Gillette Stadium, Tracy was hit and driven backwards and into the turf on what appeared to be a routine run. However, he stayed down on the turf, causing trainers to attend to him on the field.

Upon getting up, he struggled putting weight on his left leg as he was assisted off the field. He was evaluated in the medical tent before being carted to the locker room. Although he was listed as questionable, there was no way he was coming back into the game in that condition.

However, on Tuesday, Tracy said that he suffered a hip contusion/stinger during the loss and that he expected to be fine in short order. After he was carted off, fans feared Tracy would miss significant time, or at least a few weeks, with a more serious injury, but that turned out not to be the case.

Even if the Giants did not have a bye week, it sounded like Tracy may have been able to play on Sunday. But with an extra week off, he had the chance to rest, recover, and come back to the field fully rejuvenated. He was a full participant in practice yesterday and will suit up on Sunday.

Singletary and Tracy Have Been Splitting the Workload

Since Cam Skattebo’s season-ending leg injury against the Eagles, the Giants have benefited from the return of Tracy Jr. and the increased workload of Devin Singletary. The two backs have been splitting carries roughly equally to bear the brunt of the Giants’ backfield.

Going back a few games, Tracy led the Giants with 19 carries for 88 yards against the Packers, while Singletary rushed for 16 carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Tracy averaged 4.6 yards per rush compared to Singletary’s 2.8 yards per carry, but Singletary was the goal-line back.

The next week at the Lions, Tracy had a team-high 20 carries for 62 yards for 3.1 yards per carry. Singletary had 14 carries for 47 yards for 3.4 yards a carry, slightly ahead of Tracy in yards per touch. Neither running back scored a touchdown in Detroit due to a prolific passing day from Jameis Winston.

In New England, Singletary had his best game of the season, rushing for 68 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown, going for 5.7 yards per carry with a long of 22. Tracy saw ten touches for 36 yards as he played into the fourth quarter for an average of 3.6 yards per rush.

Even with Jaxson Dart being a willing and capable rusher, the one-two punch at running back has provided the Giants with a couple of rushing options to keep defenses honest. Having Tracy back in the fold keeps the dynamic going and will open things up for the pass game as well.
