Giants Reporter Torched for Proposing Absurd Dart-for-Mendoza Trade

New York Post reporter Ryan Dunleavy took some serious heat from Giants fans earlier today after posting an article on X with a description designed to garner clicks rather than offer value.

The description suggested that the Giants should consider trading away Jaxson Dart for the top pick in the 2026 NFL draft, which would be then used to select Indiana quarterback and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Fernando Mendoza.

Despite the Hoosiers’ signal-caller being very prominent at the position, the idea that Big Blue would trade away their own promising young quarterback is absurd, and Dunleavy knows it.

Giants Were On The Opposite End Last Season

Many Giants fans feared that they could have fallen all the way to ninth in the draft order by defeating the Eagles, who smartly elected to rest their starters in Week 17 despite Saquon Barkley having a chance to set the all-time regular-season rushing record.

Luckily, New York lost to Philadelphia despite playing their starters, and Joe Schoen salvaged the situation in the offseason by drafting Abdul Carter at third and snagging Jaxson Dart by making a trade back into the first round.

With the class including the likes of Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and not too many other enticing options, teams clamored to trade up to the top of the draft to snag one of them, but Tennessee denied their requests.

Ultimately, Ward has been very underwhelming as the first overall pick for the Titans, Sanders was not picked until the fifth round and was buried on the depth chart before taking over for the Browns, and Dart has looked like the best of the bunch despite missing time due to injuries.

Dunleavy Knew Better and Still Wrote The Description

The worst part about this is that Dunleavy, a veteran reporter from the New York Post, knew better and still wrote the X post in the way that he did.

The article is very well-written, as it delves into the Giants’ history of playing their best football in meaningless December and January games. Fans have seen this movie before, as recently as last season, when Big Blue played poorly enough to get the top pick and then inexplicably won a game against the playoff-contending Colts last season that had them slip to third.

When Dunleavy finally answers the question in the headline, it counters the original premise entirely, showing that he really did know better and that was not his actual opinion.

“The better quarterback is Mendoza – he’s a smarter player with the football in his hands, on his college tape – but the Giants are not getting rid of Dart, especially if Schoen is still there,” one NFL scout told The Post.

The scout continued, “The organization has a lot of faith in Dart. Rosen didn’t give Arizona the same kind of hope. A new coach and another GM could see it differently, but the Giants seem to like Dart’s vibes and personality for turning the culture around, and Mendoza is not going to will a team together like he can.”

This is precisely the point. It may very well be true that Mendoza is a smarter player, but the Giants have a lot of faith in Dart. A lot of that has to do with his mobility, his statistics, and his production as a rookie, but he also carries the confidence and swagger to lead the culture change that we have seen from New York in wins over the Eagles and Chargers this season.

It was never going to be a serious consideration for the G-Men to trade Dart away for the top pick and the ability to draft Fernando Mendoza, no matter what you think about the college prospect.

To write a description suggesting otherwise is not only misleading but also frustrating for Giants fans, especially when Dunleavy holds himself to a much higher standard in the article itself.
